We at GVN aim to keep you informed of the newest and best in home entertainment week in and week out. For the week of July 4th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get the full rundown of what you should have on your wishlist, plus take a chance to check out what Michael and I are spotlighting on The Video Attic this week.
This weeks finds the arrival of one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year. A24 and Lionsgate welcome the multi-verse journey Everything Everywhere All At Once to 4K UHD Blu-Ray with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio packed with special features including a commentary tracks, deleted scenes, outtakes and more. This one has kept audiences retuning to theaters over the past several months as it established itself as A24’s highest grossing movie ever.
Universal has two films debuting this week that are very different experiences. Downton Abbey: A New Era continues the charming story that fans have been in love with for over a decade now. The new 4K UHD Blu-Ray comes with an audio commentary, featurettes and more. On the other side of the spectrum, Liam Neeson delivers his latest attempt to kick butt for our amusement in Memory. This one seems slightly more intriguing due to it being directed by the man who made Casino Royale, but we are still not getting our hopes up to unreasonable levels.
In the land of the Criterion Collection (now having their 50% off sale at Barnes & Noble), we have two eagerly anticipated titles making their 4K UHD debut. First off, we have Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho’s fantastical drama Okja starring Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal and Seo-hyun Ahn getting a physical release after being stuck on Netflix exclusively. The release is available in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio along with a host of new interviews and other supplements. Elsewhere in the world of beloved auteurs, Sofia Coppola shows how much talent she had from the very beginning with The Virgin Suicides. Not only can you now own the film starring Kirsten Dunst on 4K UHD, but there are some great special features that add a lot to the experience.
Also in the land of 4K UHD Blu-Ray, we have some superstar Tom Cruise saving the world through some time-loop shenanigans in the deliriously fun Edge of Tomorrow from Warner Bros. This film never got the appreciation it deserved at the box office, but it has steadily grown a following in the subsequent years.
Next up, Kino Classics is putting out a trio of “nature run amok” made-for-TV titles on Blu-Ray for the first time. Pick your poison: we have the skin-crawling discomfort of Ants!, the visceral terror of Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo, or the nightmare fuel of killer bees in Terror Out Of The Sky. Honestly, these are the types of movies that will make you not want to leave the house ever again.
This is only a taste of the incredibly packed lineup you have to look forward to you this week. Be sure to check out the full list below after checking out The Video Attic where we discuss the 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of God Told Me To from Blue Underground, the alien abduction thriller Fire In The Sky, a dramatic Kevin Hart in Fatherhood, new releases from Kino Lorber, MVD Entertainment, Paramount and more.
