We at GVN aim to keep you informed of the newest and best in home entertainment week in and week out. For the week of June 27th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get the full rundown of what you should have on your wishlist, plus take a chance to check out what Michael and I are spotlighting on The Video Attic this week.
This weeks finds the arrival of two new releases that are continuing previous properties in different ways. Warner Bros. has been attempting to make the Fantastic Beasts franchise work as well as the Harry Potter films, and the closest they have gotten so far is Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore. We personally find Mads Mikkelsen to be an upgrade in this story, and his appearance does inject some energy that we would be interested to see continue. If you are a fan of the Wizarding World, the new 4K UHD Blu-Ray looks and sounds incredible and is packed with special features.
Less a continuation and more a second swing at the ball, Universal has entrusted Blumhouse with updating the classic Stephen King tale Firestarter with the hunky Zac Efron taking over the protective dad role. The new Blu-Ray comes with an audio commentary, deleted scenes, an alternate ending and more.
In the land of the Criterion Collection (now having their 50% off sale at Barnes & Noble), we have two eagerly anticipated titles making their Blu-Ray debut. First off, we have the Oscar-nominated critical darling The Worst Person In The World debuting on Blu-Ray after providing stiff competition in the Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay categories at the Oscars earlier this year. The release has an incredible making-of featurette along with some deleted scenes and other material fans will not want to miss. On the much more gross-out side of the spectrum, but with no less of a passionate fanbase, we have the John Waters classic Pink Flamingos finally available in HD with plenty of supplemental features to keep you busy.
In the land of 4K UHD Blu-Ray, we have some great offerings from a couple of our favorite labels. Arrow Video is giving us a Tony Scott classic written by Quentin Tarantino with True Romance. This sprawling ensemble including Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and Dennis Hopper can now be seen in vibrant Dolby Vision with a dazzling array of special features.
Next up, Kino Classics is putting out two titles from beloved auteurs that no film fan will want to be without. On the newer side of the spectrum, we have George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez sizzling on screen with Steven Soderbergh’s crime comedy Out Of Sight newly restored in Dolby Vision from the Original Camera Negative. Heading a few decades back and we meet up with the master Stanley Kubrick and his early film noir Killer’s Kiss newly out in Dolby Vision with a fantastic new audio commentary.
This is only a taste of the incredibly packed lineup you have to look forward to you this week. Be sure to check out the full list below after checking out The Video Attic where we discuss the 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of the James Dean classic Giant, the music documentary a-ha: The Movie, an unhinged Nicolas Cage in Vampire’s Kiss, new releases from Kino Lorber, MVD Entertainment, RLJE Films and more.
