GVN Home Entertainment Release Round-Up May 30-June 5: ‘The Boys’ Hits Blu-Ray, Tons Of New 4K Releases & More

We at GVN aim to keep you informed of the newest and best in home entertainment week in and week out. For the week of May 30th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get the full rundown of what you should have on your wishlist, plus take a chance to check out what Michael and I are spotlighting on The Video Attic this week.

One of the most exciting releases of the week is the arrival of The Boys: Seasons 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray from Sony after being exclusive to Prime Video. While we cannot knock the ease of streaming, lovers of physical media long to own their favorite shows, and this new release offers a crystal clear A/V presentation and a decent array of special features. This is one of the most entertaining shows around, and you owe it to yourself to have this one on your shelf.

After such brutality, you will want to settle in with something a little more inspirational and heartwarming, and Shout! Factory has you covered with the charming anime Poupelle Of Chimney Town from Tokyo’s famed STUDIO4ºC. This particular release has some extensive interviews and a Q&A that fans will not want to miss.

As has become a pattern in recent times, it is another BIG week in the world of 4K UHD releases. Scream Factory is serving up recent Blumhouse favorites Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U on 4K UHD featuring new audio commentaries for each in addition to the 4K presentation. If you are looking for well-established classics, Kino Classics is throwing down the gauntlet with Sergio Leone’s iconic spaghetti westerns A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More starring Clint Eastwood. Both releases have been meticulously restored and newly color graded in 4K UHD which allows them to stand as the definitive releases of these films to date.

Sony is sneakily dropping one of the standout releases of the year so far with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the acclaimed musical 1776 on 4K UHD Blu-Ray. Long before there was Hamilton, this was the musical about our founding fathers that audiences were obsessed with. This new release includes FOUR cuts of the film, including two that have not been available on disc for several decades. Get further thoughts on this title on The Video Attic below.

The Criterion Collection are sure to be turning some heads with the 4K UHD release of the Barbara Stanwyck film noir classic Double Indemnity in Dolby Vision with a ton of special features. While not as flashy, the label will also be releasing the offbeat noir Chan Is Missing from acclaimed director Wayne Wang, which is sure to impress cinephiles. Not to be outdone, Paramount is releasing the Brian De Palma classic The Untouchables starring Kevin Costner and Sean Connery on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in both a standard and SteelBook edition.
