When Netflix announced in December of 2019 that a new Masters of the Universe project was in development, fans paid attention. And when it was described as a direct sequel to the popular 1983 Filmation television series, MOTU fans were extremely excited. At that time and in conjunction with the new NetFlix series, Dark Horse and Mattel collaborated to produce a comics series tie-in for Masters of the Universe Revelation that dropped around the same time the show premiered in 2021.

Seeing the enthusiasm for all things MOTU and following in the footsteps of their Masters of the Universe Masterverse Anthology, Dark Horse is once again visiting Castle Greyskull with a 4 issue limited comic series that will serve as a prequel to the Netflix series. Entitled Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny, it features the talented writing of Tim Seeley, the artistry of Eddie Nuñez, Color by Brad Simpson and lettering by AndWorld Design.

It is through the courtesy of our friends at Dark Horse Comics that we present this exclusive Dark Horse announcement for the series as well as a look at the cover and variant covers for the first issue.

Prequel to “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (6/23/2023)— Dark Horse Comics and Mattel present Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny, a prequel comic series to the hit Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. This new series is scripted by experienced Masters of the Universe writer Tim Seeley (Masters of the Universe: Masterverse, Local Man), illustrated by Eddie Nuñez (Masters of the Universe: Masterverse), colored by Brad Simpson (All Eight Eyes), and lettered by AndWorld Design. The first issue will also include two variant covers by Freddie Williams II and Javier Rodriguez.

On the world of Eternia, a fragile balance exists between science and magic–a balance kept by the universe’s mightiest hero, He-Man! On a peaceful mission to the island nation of Anwat Gar, the royal Eternian caravan comes under attack by the minions of the evil Skeletor. And on the island itself, the nefarious Evil-Lyn sets in motion a plan that could lead to all-out war!

Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny #1 (of 4) arrives in comic shops September 6, 2023. It is now available to pre-order for $3.99 at your local comic shop.

    Praise for Tim Seeley:

“Overall, Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #1 is a smorgasbord of treats for He-Man fans. It leans into the different elements of the mythology and cuts diamonds out of the rough.”—CBR

“Dark Horse Comics’ Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #1 recalls the innocence and wonder of the 1980s comics and movies. By exploring two alternative versions of Eternia, this issue celebrates the qualities of a true hero.”—The Comicbook Distpatch

“Whether you’re a fan of all things He-Man or only have love for the 80’s Filmation cartoon, the inside baseball nature of the story doesn’t flaunt its knowledge in the reader’s face to prove a point. It uses that information to craft an exciting story that all MOTU fans will thoroughly enjoy.” –Forces of Geek

“Masters of the Multiverse #1 is a sharply written and skillfully drawn return to the world of He-Man, with plenty of new twists and old references.” –Monkeys Fighting Robots

“If you’ve never been a He-Man fan, this is the book for you. You can learn all about the different versions of the property and pick the one you like, and go from there. If you’re a hardcore fan, it’s an absolute thrill to see the different versions of Masters interacting with each other. Bottom line: This is a great comic.” –Comic Watch

“This is a fun, engaging adventure that doesn’t get bogged down in treating the iterations of He-Man with kid gloves.” –Super Powered Fancast
