    Métal Hurlant

“Métal Hurlant,” known as “Howling Metal” in English, was established in December 1974 by comic artists Jean Giraud (also known as Mœbius), Philippe Druillet, journalist-writer Jean-Pierre Dionnet, and financial director Bernard Farkas. Collectively, they were referred to as “Les Humanoïdes Associés” (United Humanoids). This also served as the name of the publishing house that issued Métal Hurlant. It ran in one form or fashion until it ceased publication in July 1987 although it made a short return in 2002 and was relaunched again in 2021.

    Now in Kickstarter

Now, fifty years after its initial release in France, the seminal and influential Metal Hurlant, is being published in English. Recently launched in Kickstarter, this latest version will be a quarterly anthology from Humanoids, offering an extensive 272+ page literary experience. Each issue will be thematically organized, presenting brand-new material from leading comic creators worldwide. These include such talents as Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Aimée de Jongh, James Stokoe, Toru Terada, Fabien Vehlmann, and Mark Waid. In addition, it will also include insightful cultural analysis, and classic tales from the original series’ icons, including some long out of print short stories by Mœbius.

    Exclusive Excerpt

In advance of this exciting English translation, we are sharing with our readers this exclusive excerpt from “The Rite” by writer/artist Elie Huault.

“Metal Hurlant’s ongoing mission is to enthrall readers, explore new paths, and publish bold and transgressive storytellers. The vast majority of the material in Metal Hurlant will be original, but bringing archival content—such as Mœbius’ short stories—back into print allows us to introduce some of the most iconic comics creators of all time to a new generation. Our intention is to curate the reading experience with gems from Metal Hurlant’s storied past in France, alongside insightful cultural reportage and new, complete stories by contemporary masters.”
