Oni Press ‘SubZero Volume 1’ by Junepurrr

The Webtoon “SubZero” by Junepurrr has become a fan favorite, amassing over 375 million reads and three million subscribers. This romance fantasy epic has been a resounding success and is set to captivate an even broader audience with its upcoming print edition. On September 25th, Oni Press will release “SubZero Vol. 1,” which will compile episodes 0–25 of the Webtoon, featuring brand-new, previously unpublished back matter material.

In advance of this exciting publication, we are pleased to offer this Exclusive First Look at some of the pages from this first volume. As well as exclusive commentary from Creator Junepurrr. Thanks to the good people at Oni Press and Junepurrr:

Cover of the graphic novel "SubZero" by Junepurr, featuring a woman with red hair in a green dress holding a sword, with a ghostly figure of a man and a dragon in the background.

A split-pane comic depicting soldiers noticing a traveler identified by their uniform. One soldier admires another's appearance with blushing and hearts. A group of characters on horseback converse about being in enemy territory. One expresses doubt, noticing the vibrant and lively surroundings. The leader reassures that the villagers pose no threat. A comic page with four panels. A red-haired woman sighs, a blond man comments on sad faces, a group of somber people appears, and another man reflects on wishing his town's friends were there. A comic page featuring a conversation between two characters, one male and one female, discussing the female's appearance. The dialogue reveals surprise and admiration for her looks and status.

“This scene introduces us to two of the other major characters in the story. Aaron (the lieutenant) is Clove’s handsome personal bodyguard and childhood friend. He is often shown to be much more sympathetic to Clove’s feelings and her wellbeing outside her role as the Azure Dragon. Nouren, the purple-eyed Guard Captain, was originally designed on the spot as a background character, but fans liked him so much I decided to give him a bigger role in the story.”

Oni Press ‘SubZero Volume 1’ by Junepurrr hits stores on September 25th. Making it possible for fans of the webtoon and those unfamiliar to share in Junepurrr’s vision:

“SubZero is a love letter to fantasy stories, palace dramas and romance, created as an escape during a very low period in my life. While the characters possess fantastical Dragon powers, the story deals with themes of duty, sacrifice, and the true strength that lies beneath a veil of fangs and scales. It is my greatest hope that readers of SubZero will find the escape and excitement I felt when I created it.”
