Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Spider-Man first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962). It was one of the first characters that featured a teenage hero who wasn’t a sidekick. Peter Parker experienced the same angst and challenges as other teenagers, but he also possessed super-strength, agility, and the ability to walk on walls—all of which he acquired after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Spider-Man was unique, and readers quickly fell in love with the character.
Eventually, in 1966, artist John Romita took over from Steve Ditko, and the book continued to be a fan favorite. Romita created new characters for the series, including Rhino, Shocker and Wilson Fisk, A.K.A. The Kingpin. He also introduced a new romantic interest for Peter in Mary Jane Watson. By 1977, the character had become so popular that Stan Lee and Romita brought Spider-Man to newspapers with The Amazing Spider-Man comic strip. Syndicated until 2019, Amazing Spider-Man was separate from the comic book but used the same supporting characters and villains.
Starting soon, Clover Press and The Library of American Comics are teaming up to bring a four-volume set of the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip to Kickstarter. Spanning from 1977 to 1980, it will be part of Clover Press’ spectacular new line of deluxe slipcase editions.
Clover Publisher Hank Kanalz
“The Library of American Comics remastered and collected the strip in a series of hardcover collections—but so many of them are out of print, making the collection highly sought after and almost impossible for your average comics lover to get their hands on. Now, Clover Press and The Library of American Comics are bringing the collections back to print in an affordable softcover format! We’re collecting the strip strictly by year, reprinting each installment from January 1 to December 31. We can’t wait to help get these iconic comic strips into the hands of Spidey lovers everywhere!”
In addition to these special edition books, fans will also have the chance to obtain an Amazing Spider-Man 1000-piece puzzle, which we are proud to exclusively reveal thanks to the good folks at Marvel, Clover Press, and The Library of American Comics.
