Having completed the annual tradition of reviewing the Best Comics of 2024 in the Talking Comics style, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the interviews I’ve had the privilege to conduct. I owe much of this opportunity to our amazing PR partners: SuperFan Promotions (Hanna Behedry, David Hyde, and Dustin Holland), Don’t Hide PR (Melissa Meszaros), The Lippon Group (Mary Grace Leto), Mad Cave Studios (Frank Silva and James Faccinto), and Brasco Marketing (Greg Behr), among many others. However, the true stars of these interviews are the creatives who generously share their time with us, and by extension, with you, our readers. So, without further ado, we present some of the best interviews of 2024. They are not ranked in any order, proving once again how generous and open comic creators are.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: Creator Marco Finnegan for Oni Press ‘CALAVERA, P.I. #1’

Man in a white shirt and cap sits, smiling, in front of a colorful comic-themed background with text about an interview for "Calavera P.I. Issue 1.

One of the things that make for an interesting interview is the creator’s willingness to share their challenges, their insights on what made them tell their particular story, and to have a sense of humor about their work and themselves. Marco Finnegan met all of those criteria and more. Of course, it didn’t hurt that his Oni Press book Calavera, P.I. was an intriguing concept and the fact that it all started out as a gag. Sometimes, all it takes is an idea and the willingness to run with it. Marco proved that he was, and it was a pleasure talking to him about his work and the new book. Personality alone made Marco Finnegan one of my favorite interviews of 2024.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: Co-Writer Thomas E. Sniegoski: ‘Hellboy And The BPRD: The Goddess of Manhattan’

It is always a pleasure to talk to any of the writers and artists who work with iconic Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola. They have never failed to be forthcoming and willing to share what went into their latest projects in the Mignolaverse. Writer Thomas E. Sniegoski fell easily into that category as we discussed his collaboration with Christopher Golden on the 3rd of his Hellboy Audio books: ‘Hellboy and The BPRD: The Goddess of Manhattan.’ We not only discussed that project but also his previous work with Christopher Golden and with iconic Bone creator Jeff Smith. Another great conversation and easily finds its way into my favorites of 2024.

GVN Interview: Dometi Pongo on the True Story Behind Candyman and His Career Journey

Sometimes interviews come up where you need to do a little research into the subject matter to familiarize yourself with the topic and the talent you are interviewing. Such was the case with Dometi Pongo, Host of “Candy Man: The True Story behind the Bathroom Mirror Murder.” This proved to an interesting subject as well as a great interview. Dometi’s enthusiasm just came through the Zoom screen and his road to his successful career was a conversation in itself. If you get the chance, you should check out his Podcast and learn all about some of the facts that were intertwined in the film Candy Man. This was an easy choice for my favorite interviews of 2024.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: 14 Of Iron Circus Comics” Perfect Crime Party’s” Imaginative “Culprits”

This particular interview was a favorite because it was different from any I had ever done. I had interviewed one, two, even three people at one time. However, there was a challenge in talking to 14 different creators for a project. Nevertheless, when it comes to the folks at Iron Circus, such gatherings of talent are not out of the norm, especially when it comes to one of their anthologies. Such was the case with their “Perfect Crime Party,” a collection of tales where the mission was to tell a “crime caper” story in whatever style the creative teams chose. This made for a diverse and entertaining collection of stories, almost as diverse as the creators behind them. The opportunity to talk to so many creative individuals made this interview one of my favorites for 2024.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: ‘The Boys,’ Co-Creator Writer Garth Ennis for Ahoy Comics ‘BABS’

It is always an exciting prospect to converse with a creator whose work you admire. While this holds true for most creators we have the opportunity to engage with, it would be dishonest not to acknowledge some occasional fanboying. Such was the case with writer Garth Ennis, co-creator of “The Boys” and Ahoy Comics’ new title “BABS.” During our conversation, we discussed his early career, the influence of iconic writer Alan Moore, his collaboration with longtime partner Jacen Burrows on “BABS,” and naturally, his thoughts on Amazon Prime’s upcoming final season of “The Boys.” Therefore, any opportunity to speak with Mr. Ennis is among my top favorites for 2024.

GVN Talking Comics: The Legend of Kingdom Come w/ Producer Sal Abbinanti & Director Remsy Atassi

Promotional poster for "The Legend of Kingdom Come" featuring a comic character and photos of producer Sal Abbinanti and director Remsy Atassi for a Talking Comics interview.

Over the past few years, I have had the honor of speaking with artist and writer Sal Abbinanti on numerous occasions, typically for his own projects such as “The Hostage” and his “Atomika: God is Red” Omnibus. However, for the past few years, he had collaborated with Director Remsy Atassi on an exciting documentary focused on the creation of Alex Ross and Mark Waid’s “Kingdom Come.” As a long-time admirer of that iconic story and the art of Alex Ross, I actively pursued the opportunity to speak with Sal and Remsy. I was therefore delighted when I was given the chance to discuss their project, which was nearly four years in the making. A book that I long admired and guests who knew all about what we could expect from the upcoming documentary? This one HAD to be one of my favorites for 2024.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: Jimmy Palmiotti & Amanda Conner Discuss “The Deadly Trio: Doomsayer #1” On Kickstarter

GVN Talking Comics Interview: Brian Pulido & Billy Tucci On ‘The Deadly Trio: Doomsayer’

Promotional image for a Talking Comics interview featuring creators from Coffin Comics and Crusade Comics, highlighting "Deadly Trio" graphic imagery and logos.

When it comes to interviews, unique projects and the creative forces behind them ALWAYS makes for an interesting discussion. Even more so when the creators reach out to you to help promote their vision. This was the case when long-time creator, Jimmy Palmiotti told us about a three-team collaboration between three successful publishers. Jimmy and Amanda Connor’s Paper Films, Coffin Comics founder Brian Pulido (creator of Lady Death) and Crusade Comics founder Billy Tucci (creator of Shi). From this 30-year creative friendship, they brought to Kickstarter “The Deadly Trio: Doomsayer, #1.”  With the opportunity to talk with all three teams, I broke it up into two interviews. Jimmy and Amanda for the first and Brian and Billy on the 2nd. Once again, all the elements were there for a great interview. An amazing project and long-time creators who knew the comic industry inside and out. What else COULD it be but two of my favorites for 2024.

GVN Talking Comics Interview: Writer Anthony Del Col for Gemstone Publishing’s ‘Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure’

Interview poster featuring Anthony Del Col for "Romeo vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure" with comic art and text, "Talking Comics Interview.

How often do you have the opportunity to converse with a comic writer who also has a Pulitzer Prize on his resume? Not too often, but I can now mark that off my bucket list. Talented writer Anthony Del Col has accomplished this along with his award-winning comic series “Kill Shakespeare.” In this instance, we discussed two different projects in the “Kill Shakespeare” realm. Gemstone published “Kill Shakespeare 1st Folio,” a new compendium edition of the groundbreaking series, collecting Volumes 1 and 2. This was followed by “Romeo VS Juliet,” A Kill Shakespeare Adventure with artist Stefan Tosheff. In our conversation, we discussed his background, the creation of Kill Shakespeare with co-creator Connor McCreery, and the new books in the Kill Shakespeare world, while also touching upon his Pulitzer Prize-winning piece. It was an all-encompassing discussion and one of my favorites for 2024.

    So Many More

Just like in the comics, there were many other interviews that impacted me in such cool ways I could have added much more. But these are the ones that I felt were a good cross section of the interviews that we were honored to get. Let’s hope that 2025 offers even more opportunities to share the different projects on the horizon and more importantly, introduce you to great talents you might not be familiar with. A New Year is in front of us. Let’s explore together.
