We have had the pleasure of speaking to Clover Press Editor Hank Kanalz about many exciting projects. But none bigger than this one. For decades, Marvel Masterworks has stood as one of the most respected archival lines in comics — a meticulously restored, premium celebration of the stories and creators who shaped the Marvel Universe. Now, Clover Press is stepping in to usher the line into a new era, bringing fresh energy, modern production values, and a collector-first sensibility to a brand that has defined prestige comics for generations. Their upcoming Kickstarter launch marks the beginning of this renewed vision, debuting four cornerstone volumes: Super-Villain Team-Up, The Mighty Thor, Tomb of Dracula, and The Uncanny X-Men.
At the center of this evolution is editor Hank Kanalz, whose deep industry experience and archival instincts make him uniquely suited to steward a line with this much history and expectation. Recently, we visited with Hank to explore Clover’s approach to revitalizing Masterworks, the strategy behind the first wave of collections, and what this new chapter means for longtime fans, collectors, and the future of Marvel’s most enduring library. Marvel Masterworks
GVN: It’s always a pleasure catching up with you, Hank. This new project is a big one, so let’s plunge right in. Marvel Masterworks is one of the most enduring archival lines in comics history. What does it mean for Clover Press to take the reins on continuing this legacy?
HK: First and foremost, it’s an honor. We sure hope we don’t mess it up. The pressure! This is a line that as book collectors, we were so disappointed to read was going on hiatus. So we are thrilled to be taking this line into the future. We hope we can add to the legacy of this long running line.
Staying True to its Roots
GVN: How is Clover Press handling the Masterworks line to stay true to its classic format while also offering something new and exciting for collectors?
HK: We plan on keeping the current format and look of the line for the long time collectors to continue their long standing runs with little to no change. But it’s important to attract new readers, and it can be intimidating to start collecting a series with volume 390. So Robbie Robbins has designed a new look as a great and easy way to join the fun! We haven’t been around long, but we’ve managed to earn an Eisner nomination (for the Slipcase Edition of The Marvel Art of Michael Allred), and have a reputation for publishing quality hardcover art books, so we want to bring that sensibility to the line.
Behind the First Four Collections
GVN: The first wave includes Uncanny X-Men (Chris Claremont & Jim Lee), The Mighty Thor (Walter Simonson), Tomb of Dracula (featuring the art of one of MY Favorites, Gene Colan), and Super-Villain Team-Up. What guided the decision to launch with these four specific collections?
HK: Something for everyone! It was important to us to introduce something new (Super-Villain Team-Up), show our commitment to finishing off some series (Tomb of Dracula) and continue the fan favorite series (Thor and Uncanny X-Men).
Super-Villain Team-Up features an introduction by Roy Thomas, and showcases some of the favorite artist of the time, including Herb Trimpe, George Pérez, Bob Hall, Sal Buscema, and more.
Tomb of Dracula wraps up the series run by Wolfman and Colan, and includes some gorgeous scans of Colan’s pencils in addition to completing the run that set the bar for horror in mainstream super hero comics.
The Mighty Thor wraps up Simonson’s run on the series, and includes some fun extras featuring Thunder Frog. And Walter scanned many of his original pages, so you’re not going to find a better or more authentic reproduction on this one.
Uncanny X-Men continues Claremont and Lee’s run on the series, with other artists like Marc Silvestri and Whilce Portacio. It’s well over 500 pages and includes some historic Marvel Age articles and some character studies by Jim Lee.

GVN: Masterworks are known for premium restoration and presentation. What steps is Clover taking to maintain or elevate the production standards fans expect?
HK: First and foremost – we’re engaging Cory Sedlmeier to oversee the restoration. His quality work is synonymous with Marvel Masterworks and we’re thrilled he’s on board to continue his fine work. But I’d like to think Clover Press has established itself as a publisher of high-end hardcover books, so collectors can buy with confidence that the quality will be held to the highest standards.
Working with Marvel
GVN: How has the collaboration with Marvel shaped the process—whether in curation, restoration, or ensuring continuity with previous Masterworks volumes?
HK: The team at Marvel has been a terrific partner with us on this. Ultimately, this is their line, but they’ve given us a tremendous amount of freedom and latitude, and are very open to what we’ve proposed. They have institutional knowledge we do not have, so they provide invaluable feedback when we’ve gone down the wrong rabbit hole. But they partnered with us for a reason, and they have been remarkably supportive of our crazy asks.

GVN: Masterworks collectors are passionate and detail-oriented. With the upcoming Kickstarter, what considerations are you making to ensure this new era meets the expectations of long-time fans while welcoming new readers?
HK: It’s about choices. There is such a thing as too many choices, but we’re providing the opportunity to continue to collect your books as you have been. But if you’ve been hoping for something fresh and new, that’s an option for you, too. And then we’ve created some unique extras that I think will be of interest to long time collectors, including some fantastic prints, a double-sided poster, and some journals.

GVN: Thanks as always, Hank. In closing, with the Fall 2026 wave setting the tone, how far ahead is Clover Press planning the Masterworks roadmap, and what excites you most about where the line can go next?
HK: We have a roadmap for the next 36 months! And we’re hitting some of the greatest arcs of all time. It’s a fantastic time to check out Marvel Masterworks!
