HBO Orders ‘Watchmen’ Series

Who watches the Watchmen? Us, apparently. HBO has officially ordered a Watchmen series. Based off Damon Lindelof’s work, Zack Snyder produced a live-action film in 2009 that was widely praised and criticized, as well as talked about today. Now, ten years later, an official show will premiere starring Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. That’s quite a cast!

The original Watchmen movie was dark, edgy, and rated R. In this world, superheroes are treated like outlaws and from what we saw, don’t always hold a moral code that we see from the likes of Superman or Captain America. HBO is the perfect home for a series like the Watchmen, which Lindelof will write and Nicole Kassell will direct the pilot episode. According to a letter Lindelof posted in May, the show will not be a re-telling of the comics, but a new story featuring new characters, in the present day.

The official synopsis provided by HBO is as follows:

“Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
“Some of the characters will be unknown,” Lindelof wrote. “New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”
