A pale clown with yellow eyes, red makeup, and sharp teeth glares menacingly upward, wearing a dark ruffled collar against a blue, shadowy background.

HBO has officially renewed its original drama series IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season. The Warner Bros. Television production, executive produced by filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, will continue its expansion of Stephen King’s iconic universe under the guidance of showrunner Brad Caleb Kane.

Since its debut, the series has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history. The complete eight-episode first season is currently available to stream on HBO Max.

Critics have responded with strong praise. Variety called it “a masterfully woven, intricate psychological horror.” USA Today described the show as “powerful and gripping,” while Decider labeled it a “thrilling must watch.” Forbes highlighted its visual ambition, The Seattle Times called it “horrifically mesmerizing,” and The New York Times singled out Andy Muschietti’s direction for serving up “a perfect nightmare of mounting panic and terror.”

“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation. Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”

    — Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming

“We know IT: Welcome to Derry will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2. We look forward to bringing fans back to the town of Derry to experience the next chapter and uncover even more of what lies beneath the surface.”

    — Clancy Collins White, President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Television

“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”

    — Andy and Barbara Muschietti

    Season Two: Into the 1930s

Season two of IT: Welcome to Derry is set in 1935 during the Great Depression. It centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammunition and encounter unimaginable horror. The story remains rooted in the world of Stephen King’s novel It and continues the vision established by Andy Muschietti in the feature films IT and IT Chapter Two.

    Production Credits

The series is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers include Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (through their Double Dream production company), Brad Caleb Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis, and Dhana Gilbert. Kane will serve as showrunner for the second season.

With its first season already establishing a strong critical and audience foundation, IT: Welcome to Derry is poised to dig even deeper into the dark history of Derry and the enduring terror of Pennywise.
