Dee Johnson, known for producing hit shows like ER, Fellow Travelers, and this year’s Netflix hit series Zero Day, is reuniting with the streaming platform to adapt Alice Feeney’s best-selling novel, His & Hers, into a six-episode limited series. The series stars Emmy winner Jon Bernthal and Emmy-nominated actress Tessa Thompson, who play an estranged married couple who find themselves in the middle of a murder case. The crime thriller delivers the first big hit of the New Year.
His & Hers is set in Atlanta, where Anna (Tessa Thompson), a struggling news anchor, hears about a murder in Dahlongega. It is a small town where she grew up, and she pounces on the case to search for answers. Enter Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), who is awfully suspicious of Anna’s intentions and finds her motives starting to cross into his own investigation. Pablo Schreiber and Sunita Mani star alongside Thompson and Bernthal.

Honestly, things start a little slow within that first episode, where you begin to worry about what is ahead. However, the moment Anna comes to town and interacts with Jack is when things start to pick up. The chemistry between Bernthal and Thompson truly carries this series. The love/hate relationship between these two adds this hilarious nature to quite a serious story.
Bernthal plays the rugged, hard-nosed detective Jack Harper. At times, it feels like an all too familiar role we’ve seen from him. He plays a good cop, and we know that. However, unlike previous roles, he has a little more meat on the bone and provides quite an emotional layer to Harper that I wasn’t expecting. Harper has been through the wringer, and how Bernthal delivers in those softer moments is what impresses the most.
Opposite of Bernthal is Tessa Thompson, who is slowly becoming one of my favorite actresses. Anna has truly lost it all. A failed marriage after the death of their kid, a news anchor job being taken from someone else, leading to her fighting an uphill battle to get it back. There is an emotional scene between Anna and Jack, who talk about what went wrong in their marriage, which had me in tears. Thompson’s range is truly incredible.

While I haven’t read Alice Feeney’s book, I can only imagine how readers felt weaving through the twists and turns that she intertwines with this story. The structure and how it all comes together in the end reminded me of Apple TV’s Presumed Innocent. Just when you think you know where things are going, there is a massive twist thrown your way. I can’t tell you how many times I thought I knew who the killer was and guessed wrong. Just masterful writing and execution.
Another beautiful thing was the pacing of the series. Too often, we are seeing shows explore these stories over eight to ten episodes. Instead, the creators told the entire story in a tight six episodes, leading to the foot always being on the gas. I wish more showrunners would see how effective a series can be by not forcing us to explore unnecessary plot points that do nothing but extend the number of episodes.
Ultimately, we are feasting rather well to kick off 2026 with the debut of two hit shows, His & Hers and The Pitt. His & Hers is filled with twists and turns that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Undoubtedly, if you are a fan of Jon Bernthal, Tessa Thompson, or crime series in general, this needs to skyrocket to the top of your watch list. With the top-notch writing and brilliant pacing, this will be the first great binge of 2026.
