Disney and Pixar’s latest film Elemental follows the journey of Ember and Wade, a fire and water elemental respectively, as they find their way through the beautiful Element City. During their time together, the two begin to fall in love, despite the two being incompatible. So with a wonderful love story and a beautiful city backdrop, what better artist to write an original song to tie all these elements together than Lauv?
In a virtual press conference for Pixar’s latest film, Lauv and director Peter Sohn discuss the original song titled, “Steal the Show”. “…I really related to the love aspect of the film,” the popular singer-songwriter said when asked about what drew him into this movie. After having seen some of the early storyboards for the scene in which features his song, Lauv explained his thought process on developing his song. “[I] wanted to create this song that had this feeling of someone coming into your life and totally changing everything for you…” The song perfectly encapsulates the themes of Elemental and the relationship Ember and Wade have. Wade shows up in Ember’s life at an extremely turbulent time in her life, yet Ember still finds herself falling head over heals for him. Through Wade, Ember’s eyes are opened to whole other side of Element City she has never experienced.
Director Peter Sohn talked about how quickly Lauv connected to his story through the really early storyboards. “It moved me to no end that you connected with it.” Sohn then went on to express his admiration for the artist, particularly his song “I Like Me Better” saying the song captures a feeling of falling in love for the first time and had strong city vibes. “I remember getting [“Steal the Show”] back and then feeling the film in the DNA,” Sohn gushed, “I was blown away… it was a tremendous gift…”

Ever since I was young, I had always been fascinated in film and the work that goes into them. I love animation, blockbuster hits, indie films and everything in between. Some day I’ll have the privilege of being apart of the filmmaking process.
