How Expectations Around Entertainment Have Changed

Entertainment has existed since the dawn of time, but today we need more than just campfire stories and cave drawings to keep us entertained. Just as athletes a hundred years ago couldn’t touch the world records that athletes today (and tomorrow) are setting, our expectations and benchmarks have changed.

Today, entertainment is bigger, bolder, and more immersive than ever, so what are people looking for in their big box hits today? Let’s get into it:

    · Engaging Experiences

One of the biggest shifts in the entertainment sphere is the role of direct engagement. Video games pull you in by requiring your participation, but more than that, use haptic feedback, increasing challenges, and full audio/visual immersion to make time feel like it’s slipped away and pull you in with fun.

Every successful game does this, from the slot and live casino games on Kanuuna.com, to the AAA titles. How they do it specifically depends on the type of game you’re playing. Regardless, however, you are in charge of cause and reaction. Your button presses impact the state of the game, and that’s the core of the engaging experience.

    · Memorable Narratives

We as a species have always been defined by our ability to make sense of the world through stories. From the stories we tell each other of our lives to the stories we make up. With new tools and standards, the narratives today take on bolder, more engaging, and more memorable twists and turns than ever before.

We’re also pushing the limits of narratives. What we see on our screens today is darker, more daring than in the past, and we’re constantly looking for new ways to shock and wow audiences everywhere.

    · Advanced Computer Graphics

Creating engaging, memorable narratives is best done when you immerse audiences in a compelling world. Fiction has always been able to do this, simply because of the power of the written world, but even novels don’t come close to what advanced computer graphics have done for our imaginations and expectations for entertainment.

Advanced CGI, and even now with generative AI, mean that we can now bring to life the most epic parts of our imaginations in ways previously impossible. Far beyond concept art, into a living, breathing space.

These advancements in graphics have raised the standards for all forms of media, with written fiction becoming more descriptive since audiences have a firmer basis to go on, to mobile games, to pictures, and, of course, to media and games.

    · Adaptive Music

Soundtracks have accompanied entertainment for centuries, but with adaptive music, which naturally weaves between songs as you play a game, our immersion is greater than ever. Sound design in general has made leaps and bounds, increasing our expectations around entertainment.

    · Choice Matters

Finally, an increasing number of media forms have expanded, putting our choices front and center. Yes, there’s always been an element of strategizing in games. Poker and even slots all contain strategy choices that put the player in the driver’s seat. These choices matter and make any game more immersive.

What’s becoming increasingly possible, however, are rich choice-based role-playing games. In the past, choice trees were limited, but as game technology develops, so too are our options.
