Majestic Mjolnir. The mystic hammer of the Mighty Thor. As the legend goes, only someone who was worthy could yield the mighty hammer and thus, the power of Thor. This was true in the Marvel Comics Universe as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the MCU, only two beings have proved capable of lifting Thor’s hammer: Thor himself and the Vision. One of my favorite scenes in Avengers: Age of Ultron was the look on Thor’s face when he though for a moment that Steve Rogers might be able to lift it. But that was Mjolnir.
After the events in Infinity War, Thor has a new hammer, “StormBreaker” (which is a heck of lot easier to pronounce than Mjolnir). It turned out someone else WAS able to lift the new hammer in Avengers: Infinity War. That person was Thor’s friend “Tree” also known as the Guardians of the Galaxy member Groot.
Groot was able to hand Thor the new hammer, during a the scene of the hammers creation in Avengers: Infinity War, and even sacrificed one of his own limbs to serve as the hammer’s handle. Joe and Anthony Russo was asked during the “Vudu Avengers Infinity War Viewing Party” if this meant Groot was also “worthy.” It was clarified by the Russo’s that the worthiness enchantment that Odin placed on Mjolnir was specific to that particular hammer and does not transfer over to any subsequent weapon.
“Mjolnir requires worthiness, not Stormbreaker,” the Russos tweeted from the official Avengers Twitter account. So if we go by that, any of the Avengers might be able to wield it. Although Thor would probably argue that point.
Avengers: Infinity War releases on Digital HD on July 31 and on Blu-ray on August 14th.
