Photos, screenshots, and shared images play a very important role in my investigation as evidence for crimes and suspicion. Often my clients share key information through WhatsApp that I usually save on my phone for quick access during investigations. I use a Google Pixel 6, and I have trusted it for a long time because of its clean Android system, stable performance and regular updates.

Last month while I was handling a case related to insurance fraud, a informer of mine had shared several photos on WhatsApp. These included false document images, vehicle photos, and some location pictures. I had already reviewed them once and planned to submit them as evidence. But when I was clearing some space on my pixel phone, I deleted a few folders from the internal storage. I did not realize at that moment that the WhatsApp Images folder was also removed mistakenly.

Later that night, when I opened WhatsApp to check the images again, they were gone. The chat was still there, but the photos showed a blank download icon. I checked my gallery app, searched by date, and even used the file manager. The images were missing.

The Moment I Knew This Was Serious

At first, I assumed WhatsApp would restore them automatically. That did not happen. I checked the WhatsApp media folder again. I restarted the phone and checked once more. Nothing changed. I then opened Google Photos, hoping they were backed up. Unfortunately, backup was turned off for WhatsApp images at that time.

Unfortunately reaching out to the informer again was out of option. The photos were sent only once, and the sender was no longer reachable. Losing these files could slow down the case and my entire hardwaork on this investigation would have been erased with just one mistakes.

Understanding How WhatsApp Photos Get Deleted on Android

Before trying any solution, I wanted to understand what could have caused this. I spent some time reading user discussions and Android support pages. I learned that WhatsApp photos are stored locally on the phone. If the folder is deleted during storage cleanup, the images disappear from the gallery as well. One wrong tap can remove media folders completely. Also, when files are deleted, Android does not always remove them right away. They stay in the device memory until new data overwrites them. This gave me some hope. If I stopped using the phone, there was still a chance.

    Advice That Made a Difference

I spoke to a colleague who had dealt with digital evidence before. He told me one clear thing. “Do not use the phone anymore. Which means no new photos or app installs.” That advice made sense.

He also mentioned that recovery tools work better if used early. He suggested trying an Android data recovery tool called Stellar Data Recovery for Android. I had heard of Stellar before, but I had never used it on a mobile device. Still, I trusted his experience.

How I Tried to Recover the WhatsApp Photos

I used my Windows laptop and downloaded Stellar Data Recovery for Android from the official site. I did not want to take risks with unknown software. Installation was simple and did not take much time. After launching the tool, I connected my Google Pixel using a USB cable. The software detected the device quickly. It asked me to choose the type of files I wanted to recover. I selected photos.

The scanning process took some time. I let it run without touching the phone. Once the scan was complete, the tool showed a list of recoverable files. I could see thumbnails of images along with file details. I scrolled slowly and checked dates.

The same WhatsApp photos that were missing. The document images. The vehicle photos. Everything was there. The preview option helped a lot. I clicked on a few images to confirm they were and complete. The quality was intact with no signs of corruption. I selected the required photos and clicked save. The files were recovered safely on my computer.

    Why This Worked for Me

What I liked about Stellar Data Recovery for Android was its simple design. It did not confuse me with complex steps. Each screen explained what to do next. The preview feature gave me confidence before recovery.

I also tried checking WhatsApp backup earlier. Sadly, the last backup was older and did not include those images. So restoring from backup was not useful in my case. The recovery tool turned out to be the only option.

A Few Important Things I Learned

After this experience, I changed how I handle data on my phone. I keep regular backups now. I avoid deleting folders without checking their contents. I also make sure WhatsApp media backup is enabled.

I am sharing this experience of mine to help others avoid panic. Losing WhatsApp photos can happen to anyone. It does not matter if you are a professional or a regular user. The important thing is to act quickly and not overwrite data.

If you ever lose WhatsApp photos on your Google Pixel, stop using the phone right away. Check backups first. If nothing helps, a recovery tool can make a real difference. In my case, it helped me recover important evidence when I needed it the most.
