Palm Springs is probably a place you want to visit, when going on vacation is something that isn’t suggested against. It isn’t, however; where you want to get stuck in a time loop as demonstrated by Hulu’s comedy film, Palm Springs. Think Groundhog Day with Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti.
Palm Springs also stars Peter Gallagher and J.K. Simmons and it might just be the perfect summer romantic comedy that we need right now. Considering that being in a lockdown can feel like the same day looped over and over again.
It’s Been Done Before, But This Is Still Good
Made famous by Groundhog Day, the idea of living a day in a constant loop that you’re aware of has been done before. In the aforementioned movie, other films, and even an episode of Supernatural. So, what makes Samberg and Milioti’s attempt at this genre different? Well, it has all of the quirkiness that comes from Samberg’s brand of comedy. It’s a fun, if not somewhat gruesome film to sink your teeth in while quarantining yourself.
Palm Springs definitely looks happy and fun, but deals with some pretty mature situations. As well as graphic ones. I mean, what would you do if you were stuck in an infinite time look? You would probably go a little crazy too. At least Samberg and Milioti had each other as Nyles and Sarah. I have to say the two of them worked well off each other. They had good chemistry that certainly helped with the flow of this movie.
Rating: 3.5/5
This film has an explosive ending (pun intended) and a nice little ending that was tied in a bow. It’s a satisfactory film that is good to turn on when you want your brain to turn off. It does a good job in rehashing an old movie trope and making it its own. It also does a great job with its actors and incorporating comedy with post-modern violence.
Palm Springs is available on Hulu now.
