European player Hylnd Amp has won the Fortnite Mobile Series Championship, the in-person final that brought together the best mobile players. The event was held on 24 and 25 October at BLAST Studios in Copenhagen, and the title earned Amp $50,000.
Sixteen phones, one studio
Before Copenhagen, the mobile series had been played entirely online. Everyone competed from home, on their own phone and with their own ping, so comparing players across regions was tricky, to put it mildly. For the final, Epic Games brought together the 16 best mobile players from Europe, North and South America, Asia, Oceania and the Middle East, and this time the conditions were the same for all of them. The studio belongs to Danish organiser BLAST, which also hosts tournaments in other games there. Mobile Fortnite has now joined that calendar.
The tournament was played in Reload Solos with Zero Build. Epic didn’t explain the choice, but it isn’t hard to work out. Building on a touchscreen is a completely different skill from building on a keyboard, and judging mobile players against the rest of the scene on that basis would have made little sense. The total prize pool was $200,000.
Match Point
The defining feature of the format is that hitting the points threshold isn’t enough on its own. Once there, the leader still needs one more match win, in other words a Victory Royale. Until that comes, the tournament goes on and everyone else can still claw their way back. In theory, a leader could cross the threshold and then go several games in a row without closing out the title. That suits the broadcast nicely. The final games never turn into a formality, even when someone has built a big lead at the top of the table.
The broadcast began at 5pm Copenhagen time. Epic Games ran separate Twitch Drops for each of the two days, and 30 minutes of viewing was enough to unlock them. In effect, the company was paying for viewers’ attention with in-game items. Advertisers pay for the same attention in cash, and the companies buying ad space in esports broadcasts aren’t just hardware and energy drink brands. The gambling industry is in there too, and online casinos are hardly newcomers to it. Wild Tokyo Casino promotes its brand in the same advertising space, and news about new online slots at https://wildtokyodk.casino/ sits alongside the classics, including live dealer tables. For Epic itself, broadcasts like this are probably first and foremost a reminder that Fortnite has a mobile scene with stars of its own.
Tenth after day one
Amp didn’t look like a favourite. After the first day he was only tenth on 145 points, well adrift of the leaders.
On day two, it was as if he had turned up for a different tournament. Amp won matches 16, 17, 20, 21 and 22, then sealed it with victory in game 25. Five wins from seven matches, each against 15 opponents, is close to unbelievable. The official standings had him on 25 matches, 1,481 points, six Victory Royales and 72 eliminations. Leave out the first day and he picked up 1,336 points on Sunday alone. His margin over second place was more than 1,000 points, a huge gap in a final featuring the 16 best players.
Who else finished in the money
DIG IAmNoob came second with 432 points, two wins, 63 eliminations and $30,000 in prize money. Hylnd Vediits finished exactly one point behind on 431, also with two wins, along with 51 eliminations and $20,000.
It was a good tournament for Hylnd. Two of its players, out of a field of 16, finished in the top three and took home $70,000 between them. The remaining $100,000 went to the players further down the standings.
What the LAN changed
Mobile Fortnite was long treated as a sideshow to the wider competitive scene. In Copenhagen it got a proper world final, with a studio, a broadcast and one venue shared by every region, while the Match Point format kept the outcome open until game 25.
