A man with a backpack and a woman wearing sunglasses stand outdoors facing each other, with trees and mountains in the background under a clear blue sky.

Nothing is as it seems when filmmaker Emily Wyland (Brittany O’Grady) teams up with cinematographer Danny (E. J. Bonilla) to shoot a documentary about reuniting with Emily’s estranged mother, Sam. When she goes missing, possibly succumbing to the addictions that tore her family apart, Emily and Danny must follow increasingly sinister clues to find her before it’s too late.

    Video Quality

In Our Blood makes its Blu-Ray debut with an accurate 1080p video presentation in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio that captures the largely found footage aesthetic properly. The conceit of the narrative is the making of a professional documentary, so the footage still largely looks great for the audience. The nuanced color palette saturates the screen with complex colors found in the dusty environment and various interiors. The image is mostly free of digital anomalies such as compression artifacts. The production design and shooting locations provide valuable textural details. Black levels largely avoid instances of banding, but there are certain moments when you will spot some. The flesh tones are natural with notable detail present in close-ups. This Blu-Ray is a favorable representation of this movie.

    Audio Quality

Utopia gives this Blu-Ray a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that assuredly translates all of the distinct facets of the mix. Dialogue comes through clearly without being overshadowed by any competing elements. The film is not horrific in the traditional sense, but the characters face intense moments with key elements adding some nice texture to the proceedings. Environmental sounds engage the surround speakers in effective ways. When the characters are moving through a house, a series of distinct ambient details flesh out the setting. The soundtrack complements the journey quite well, and it is always deftly balanced while maintaining its fidelity. The track achieves exactly what it sets out to do. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided.

Three people sit in a storage room, engaged in a serious conversation; shelves, boxes, and a clothing rack are visible in the background.

    Special Features

    • Audio Commentary: Director Pedro Kos; Writer/Producers Mallory Westfall, Steven Klein, and Aaron Kogan; and actors Brittany O’Grady and E.J. Bonilla provide a commentary track that gives some night insights into the development and production of the film. You can either listen to this only with audio or watch it with video of the Zoom call in the corner of the screen.
    • Q&A at the Fantasia International Film Festival: A 35-minute conversation with director Pedro Kos; writer/producers Mallory Westfall and Aaron Kogan; actors Brittany O’Grady and E.J. Bonilla; and other various crew members, in which they speak about the development of the film, the themes of the story, the development of the characters, and more.
    • Behind the Scenes Photos (2:06)
    • Behind the Scenes Videos (6:00)
    • Alternate Opening: A two-minute alternate opening is provided that makes our main characters feel a bit more like strangers.

    Final Thoughts

In Our Blood is a compelling mystery that brings about plenty of intriguing revelations the further you spiral down the rabbit hole. The mostly found footage presentation allows you to feel more immersed in this increasingly horrific world. Brittany O’Grady provides a very strong lead performance that anchors the emotions in something genuine. It’s a fun, under-the-radar discovery that is worthy of your time. Utopia has released a Blu-Ray featuring a very good A/V presentation and a nice assortment of special features. Recommended

In Our Blood is currently available to purchase on Standard Edition Blu-Ray or with a Limited Edition Slipcover exclusively through Vinegar Syndrome.
