Synopsis: As their marriage quietly unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family—forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.

Fortunately or unfortunately, there are no rules or a correct way to do this thing we call life. Obviously, evil and vile behavior isn’t, well, shouldn’t be tolerated; there are laws, but as far as the rest of it, it’s trial and error or some level of mimicry. We rely on our moral compass, unwritten standards, and, more often than not, on how others will view our actions. Judgment and the fear of it are bigger factors than we’re willing to admit. It’s especially apparent when it comes to things that can precede you, such as employment, marital status, education, body modifications, number of children, vehicle choice, substance use, body count, and a host of other subjects. Daily, we forget that, to our knowledge, this is our first and only attempt at navigating and understanding existence. We not only have to give ourselves and others the courtesy of mistakes and growth, but also to acknowledge and remember that what strangers think of you doesn’t really matter.

    “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

The ability to turn tragedy into comedy is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, you never know how long that pain will last or when you’ll find the levity in it. Co-written and directed by Bradley Cooper, Is This Thing On? is a grounded and endearing journey of mending broken spirits and living your truth. Inspired by real events, it’s a story of accepting things you cannot control while rediscovering independence through finding perspective. What presents as a midlife crisis during a spiraling marriage is more like a midlife ephifany. Propelled by accessible yet distinct storytelling and a career-best performance by Will Arnett, the laughs are earned, the atmosphere is genuine, and its respect for stand-up comedy is commendable.

Is This Thing On? is not only one of this year’s hidden gems, but it is one of those stories that is so specific that it takes on a universal relatability. Like a comedian working out new material, the narrative works its way from complex and disgruntled to an honest and mature feel-good film with loads of heart. With this outing being less grandiose than past Cooper-directed features, it welcomes a broader audience without sacrificing substance. As stand-up comedy is the chosen vehicle to convey its messaging and some of its themes, we witness that its therapeutic nature serves as a release for our protagonist, Alex, as well as an emotional compass for the audience. Speaking plainly yet poignantly to Gen X and Millennials, as well as anyone who has lost themselves in their relationships, it’s a reminder to hold on to your identity and maintain some form of independence. Your partner may have seen potential, but they also love you for who you were when they became infatuated. Also, you’re never too old for new hobbies or career paths.

    “What’s funny about your life?”

As we traverse part of this cathartic landscape, surrounded by cigarette smoke and punchlines, an exploration of the underground comedy scene is highlighted. Not only are there familiar names and faces like Dave Attell, Chloe Radcliff, and Jordan Jensen, but the comedy club atmosphere thrives as well. The film is witty, sharp, and wonderfully scripted, and a fantastic realization that your dreams don’t have to die. Its themes of reconciliation, family, and community shine the brightest. With a strong performance by Laura Dern, the stoner vibes and hilarity from Bradley Cooper as Balls, and again, a career-best outing by Will Arnett, Is This Thing On? is a sleeper hit. Its rewatchability is high.

    Pace & Pop

The pacing of this film, like its tone, has a natural, unintrusive ebb and flow that bounces between alert and lively and somber and contemplative. What pops is how the comedy club is similar to taking up running for Alex. It’s not only good for his mental health, but it’s also improving his life. It’s also better for his knees.

    Characters & Chemistry

Starring: Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Andra Day, Bradley Cooper, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Scott Icenogle

I’ll keep this short. If Will Arnett isn’t being considered for Best Actor for any of the televised awards shows, they’re lying. This performance was not only the best of his career, but one of the best of the year. His charisma lights up the screen. He’s able to showcase a wide range of emotions. And there is so much being conveyed with his eyes and the shakiness of his voice. And the nominees are…

Is This Thing On? recently played at AFI Fest and will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025. Stay safe and keep laughing.
