For decades, Abbott and Costello have stood at the crossroads of comedy and classic horror. Ever since their 1948 showdown with Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Wolf Man in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, they helped define the monster-mash tradition. In his latest project, James Aquilone proudly upholds that tradition, passed down through generations.
As the Bram Stoker and Rondo Award-winning editor continues expanding the Monstrous Books universe, he’s bringing Bud and Lou back into the fray with Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters. A new three-issue comic series launching on Kickstarter on October 19th. With Monstrous holding the comic rights to Kolchak, the first issue even throws the legendary Night Stalker into the mix. Pitting the trio against Janos Skorzeny in a crossover fans never knew they needed.
We recently caught up with Aquilone to discuss monster heritage, keeping the originals’ spirit alive, and why these comedy legends, like in the classic films, are never reduced to punchlines. It’s great to welcome back frequent guest James Aquilone to GVN Talking Comics.
Bringing Back Abbott and Costello
GVN: Thanks again for visiting with us, James. With your constant creative push, it seems like it’s a quarterly visit. So, let’s get into this latest endeavor, “Abbott & Costello Meet the Monsters.” Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein remains one of the most beloved horror-comedies ever made. What inspired you to bring Bud and Lou back into the world of classic monsters, and why did you choose comics for this new adventure?
JAMES: I’ve always loved Abbott and Costello. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is practically a perfect movie. The monsters are genuinely frightening, and Bud and Lou are hilarious. I’ve always wondered what would have happened if Bud and Lou continued meeting monsters, especially in the modern eras.
Comics are the perfect medium because there are really no limitations. We can send Abbott and Costello anywhere, to any time period, and have them encounter just about any creature imaginable. We can also capture the look and feel of their classic movies while doing things that would have been impossible on a 1940s movie budget.

Honoring the Spirit
GVN: As someone known for your passion for classic horror through Monstrous Books, how important was it for you to honor the spirit of Universal’s iconic monster films while still creating something fresh and exciting for modern readers?
JAMES: That was probably our biggest priority. We’re not trying to reinvent Abbott and Costello or modernize their comedy. We want these stories to feel like adventures they could have had during their heyday.
At the same time, we’re introducing them to monsters and situations they’ve never encountered before. Our first issue takes them into the world of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, the second sends them into the distant future to meet the Morlocks, and the third pits them against H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu. We’re keeping the characters true to their roots while expanding their universe.

The Challenges of Horror and Comedy
GVN: The original films balanced genuine scares with laugh-out-loud comedy. What challenges came up in capturing that same blend of horror and humor on the comic book page, and how important was it to maintain it?
JAMES: The key is remembering that the monsters aren’t in on the joke. That’s what made Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein work so well. Dracula and the Wolf Man supplied the scares. Bud and Lou supplied the comedy.
The biggest challenge in comics is timing. Abbott and Costello were masters of verbal and physical comedy, and you have to translate that into panels and word balloons. The dialogue has to sound right, the expressions have to be right, and the pacing has to work. Sometimes the funniest moment is just Lou’s reaction to something terrifying.
Mixing Kolchak with Bud and Lou
GVN: Classic monsters have endured for generations because they continue to resonate with audiences. Since you are responsible for three of the stories included, which monsters or characters are you most excited for readers to encounter in Abbott & Costello Meet the Monsters, and how did you approach reimagining them for this story?
JAMES: I’ve been publishing and writing Kolchak stories for a few years now, so I couldn’t resist the idea of crossing him over with Abbott & Costello. They’re a perfect match, and it’s been a blast to write.
We’re not really reimagining the monsters. We’re putting familiar characters into unfamiliar situations and seeing what happens.
The Many Roles of James
GVN: As has been revealed through our many chats, you’ve worn many hats as a writer, editor, publisher, and champion of horror fiction. How did those experiences influence the way you developed this project, both creatively and as a Kickstarter campaign?
JAMES: All those roles come into play. As a writer, I’m focused on the stories and characters. As an editor, I’m making sure everything feels consistent and that we’re capturing the spirit of Abbott and Costello. And as a publisher, I’m thinking about how to package and present the comics in a way that fans will appreciate.
We’ve had a lot of experience bringing classic horror properties to comics through Monstrous, and we’ve learned what works. I also love putting together creative teams and seeing how different artists interpret these characters. That’s one of the most rewarding parts of publishing.
The Impact of Kickstarter
GVN: Crowdfunding has become an increasingly important platform for creator-driven comics and for Monstrous Books as a whole. What advantages has Kickstarter provided for Abbott & Costello Meet the Monsters, and how has fan enthusiasm shaped the project so far?
JAMES: Kickstarter has been incredibly important to Monstrous. We’ve raised more than $750,000 across our campaigns, and it’s allowed us to produce projects that might not have been possible through traditional publishing.
The biggest advantage is the direct connection with fans. We can offer exclusive covers, special editions, and collectibles while getting immediate feedback from the people supporting the books. There’s also something exciting about fans helping bring Abbott and Costello back to comics for the first time in more than 50 years. They’re not just buying a comic. They’re helping make it happen.

Future Volumes
GVN: You’ve built a career celebrating monsters across novels, anthologies, and comics. If the opportunity arose for another volume, and you could personally write Abbott and Costello into a crossover with any horror icon not appearing in this series, who would it be and what kind of chaos would follow?
JAMES: There will be more volumes, and we’re hoping to get other licenses so Bud and Lou can crossover with the biggest horror icons out there. I’d love to see Abbott and Costello Meet Jason. I imagine there will be a lot of blood and running around in the woods. And Lou having trouble setting up a tent.
“…I Hope They Laugh”
GVN: Thanks again, James. Finally, for longtime horror fans, Abbott and Costello devotees, and readers discovering these characters for the first time, what do you hope they’ll take away from Abbott & Costello Meet the Monsters when they reach that final page?
JAMES: First and foremost, I hope they laugh. That’s really what Abbott and Costello were all about. I also hope longtime fans feel like we’ve done justice to Bud and Lou and captured what made them so special.
For younger readers, I’d love for the comics to inspire them to seek out the original movies. If someone reads one of our comics and then watches Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein for the first time, I’ll consider that a success. And hopefully everyone finishes the book wanting another adventure.
As we wrap up, Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters is clearly more than a nostalgic mashup. Under the guidance of Monstrous Books founder, editor, and writer James Aquilone, the project celebrates two timeless comedy legends while introducing them to a new generation through an all-star lineup of creators and classic monster mayhem. Blending humor, horror, and heartfelt fandom, the initial three-book series promises a treat for both longtime monster kids and comics readers alike.
We want to thank James for chatting with us about bringing Abbott and Costello back into the spotlight, the passion behind the project, and what supporters can expect from the Kickstarter campaign. Be sure to check out Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters on Kickstarter before the campaign ends!
