James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC and acclaimed director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is set to bring his unique storytelling approach to the world of Superman. In an interview with Gizmodo, Gunn delved into his plans for Superman: Legacy, particularly focusing on his intention to incorporate emotion into the story. He revealed that his approach to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was not about deliberately crafting a tearjerker but rather treating the characters with dignity and compassion. Gunn stated, “I just think I want to tell a story that treats the characters with dignity and compassion and is the best, most surprising, most moving story I can possibly tell.”

Gunn further emphasized that he aims to bring a similar emotional depth to Superman: Legacy, acknowledging the humanity of Clark Kent’s Superman. He expressed his desire to avoid portraying the character as unemotional, recognizing that both Superman and human beings are inherently emotional beings. Gunn stated, “I can’t say I’m looking for any particular emotions to bring out through ‘Superman,’ but I don’t want it to be unemotional. I don’t want it to deny that we are, as human beings, emotional characters and that Superman is also that.”

Furthermore, Gunn’s previous statements about casting an actor who possesses “humanity,” “compassion,” and a sense of comfort akin to a “hug” reaffirm his commitment to crafting a relatable and empathetic Superman. Additionally, there are hints that the casting choice for the Man of Steel might lean toward a younger actor, adding a fresh perspective to the character and the story.

With James Gunn at the helm of Superman: Legacy, fans can expect an emotionally charged and human-centered approach to the iconic superhero. By exploring the depths of Clark Kent’s character and infusing the story with compassion and relatability, Gunn aims to deliver a Superman film that resonates deeply with audiences. As the excitement for this new chapter in the DC universe continues to build, fans eagerly anticipate the fresh and heartfelt take that James Gunn will bring to the Man of Steel.
