James Gunn Talks The Suicide Squad and What Separates Them From The Guardians of the Galaxy

Things have been a bit whacky ever since James Gunn was announced as the director of the sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. Some fans expressed excitement to see Gunn bring the same magic that he had brought to the Guardian of the Galaxy franchise to the DC film. Other fans were trepidations that Gunn’s fun approach to the Marvel films would clash with the darker universe that the DCEU had previously tried to emulate. Others were upset that Ayer didn’t get a chance to do the sequel and now fans are petitioning for Ayer to get a chance to release his own cut of the 2016 film – like Zack Snyder was able to do with The Justice League.

What Is The Suicide Squad?

I’ve rambled enough here. Let’s get into Gunn’s interview with Empire magazine. Where the talented director talked about what The Suicide Squad is:

“Um, it’s its own thing. It does not contradict the first movie, I don’t think. It might in some small ways… I don’t know…”

What Gunn Think Of Ayer’s Suicide Squad?

When Gunn was first brought on to direct The Suicide Squad – there were reports that it wasn’t a direct sequel to 2016’s version. There were also reports that all of the characters in the first movie would be recast. Well, we know that’s not true since several actors are reprising their roles from the 2016 film in the upcoming DC film. This caused a lot of confusion and even caused fans to believe that there was some rivalry here. Team Gunn or Team Ayer? But, these are just fans – in fact, Gunn has a lot of praise for Ayer’s 2016 movie:

“Listen, David Ayer’s gotten trouble for the movie. I know it didn’t come out how David wanted it to come out. But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way. It’s something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it’s definitely added to this movie.”

Don’t Call The Suicide Squad The Guardians of the Galaxy

And since people are making the comparison between the GOTG and The Suicide Squad – same director, both groups of misfits; Gunn looks to separate the two:

“I think you know, from pretty close to the beginning, that all of the Guardians are good – apart from Nebula, who’s the outlier. But in The Suicide Squad, some of the characters end up being good, some end up being terrible. They don’t just get in fights and say they’re going to kill each other. They actually do get in fights and kill each other. You really don’t know who’s going to live and who’s going to die. I was given full freedom to kill anyone – and I mean anyone – by DC.”

Are you excited for The Suicide Squad? I know I am!
