Batwoman had made history by being the first LGBT led superhero show with Ruby Rose playing Kate Kane for The CW. Then, Rose decided to step away from the DC show after only one season. Rather than find someone to replace the character Kate Kane, The CW decided to come up with a new character. You see, plenty of Marvel and DC characters have multiple variations who have donned the name and costume. But, the only Batwoman was Kate Kane. Now, we’re getting Ryan Wilder – a creation stemming from this unique situation.
And Ryan Wilder has been cast. Javicia Leslie will be playing character, who is excited to be playing the first Black Batwoman. Leslie also knows the significance of playing this character during this time:
“This really had nothing to do with me and everything to do with my people and with little Black girls.” A lifelong Batman fan, she found her own positive representation as a child through Eartha Kitt’s Catwoman.”
Leslie stated that she was immediately attracted to the character Ryan Wilder and the possibility of playing her. She also says the audition was through Zoom during the national lockdown. Leslie described both she and the character as “quirky”:
“[But] ‘I’m a boss if I have to be’ type of mentality.'”
Showrunner for Batwoman, Caroline Davis; also said:
“Javicia blew everyone else away.”
Leslie added, in regards to the physical aspect of the role:
“I’m very active in my personal life,” she says, “so being able to allow that to be my work, that’s heaven for me. I do Muay Thai. I do fitness training. I run. Anything that’s active I’m always down for, so this is going to be like playing on the playground every day.”
Leslie added:
“There’s not many actors that get this opportunity to play in a world that you can continue to develop and expand on for a decade. This is a great beginning to what I’m sure will be a very long journey.”
Are you excited for Leslie to make her debut as Batwoman?
