According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming is due to begin in Europe during the first months of 2027. New Line acquired the project after it went into turnaround at Netflix earlier this year.
That puts another original story on Cregger’s schedule after his detour into the world of Resident Evil. Lawrence’s character has not been revealed, leaving plenty of room for speculation about exactly what kind of trouble she will face.
Cregger Is Taking His Storytelling Into Sci-Fi
Fans expecting another straightforward horror movie may be in for a surprise. In an interview with Men’s Health, Cregger described The Flood as disturbing and structurally unusual, but said it would not rely on shifting perspectives. He also pointed to the big questions and strangeness of 2001: A Space Odyssey as a useful reference.
“It’s disturbing, but it’s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it.”
That distinction makes the project especially intriguing. Both Barbarian and Weapons turned the way information reached the audience into part of the suspense. Taking that interest in unexpected storytelling into science fiction opens up possibilities beyond another variation on those films.
Jennifer Lawrence Adds Another Reason To Watch
Cregger is clearly excited about his new leading actress. In a statement shared by TheWrap, he praised Lawrence and welcomed the opportunity to work with the Warner Bros. and New Line team again.

The appeal of this pairing is easy to see. A secretive original thriller gives Lawrence room to surprise audiences, while Cregger’s approach makes it difficult to predict what the finished movie will look like.
