Joe Russo Explains Time-Traveling Captain America Decision in Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame changed the MCU forever. Not only did it kill off Tony Stark, but it also gave Steve Rogers the life he always wanted. Our last scene with Chris Evans as Captain America was as an old man and handing his shield over to Sam Wilson.

In a recent interview, Joe Russo explained the decision to do what they did with Cap:

“One thing that’s clear that Anthony and I have discussed, I don’t know that we’ve discussed this publicly at all, Cap would have had to have travelled back to the main timeline. That’s something that, yes, he would have been in a branch reality, but he would have to travel back to the main timeline to give that shield to Sam Wilson.”

Russo continued:

“In our internal logic that we defined in the room, that was the choice that we made, was based on everything that happened he would have been in a branch reality and then had to have shifted over to this, so jumped from one to the other, right, and handed the shield off.”

Though Steve Rogers had retired as Captain America, he left his legacy to someone who truly deserved it. We will see Sam Wilson team up with Bucky Barnes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ after WandaVision.
