Joe Russo Praises Tom Holland’s Performance in Cherry

Tom Holland has teamed back up with the Russo Brothers for Cherry. According to Comicbook.com, the movie is almost complete and we should be expecting a first look soon. Of course, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the distribution of the film is unknown, but Joe Russo gave an update on Cherry to CB:

“We were in post. We’ve been editing remotely with our editor. We’re just about the locked picture on it and start music and sound on it so it’ll be ready in a few months. The question is, what’s the market going to be? Where we are going to be? When are movie theaters going to reopen? There’s a lot of questions before.”

Cherry explores the opioid epidemic in America, which Russo explains as a:

“…heartbreaking examination of what’s going on in the country right now.”

With Holland as the main character, I’m sure some people doubt his abilities in such a serious film. After all, many’s only imagery of Holland is as the MCU’s Spider-Man, along with some voice over work from Disney. But, Russo assures that it’s Holland, as we’ve never seen him before:

“I think it’s an Oscar worthy performance. I think he is absolutely amazing. It is a gut wrenching performance. What he does to himself emotionally and physically is unbelievable. We have a seen an actor in a role like this in a long time. It stands the, you know, the movie stands a decade and this is an epic performance, but that certainly I think we’ll be in the Oscar conversation.”

The Russo brothers have been developing over movies at their production company AGBO, such as Cherry and Chris Hemsworth’s film Extraction. Russo explained:

“It’s certainly, our mission is to develop some big IP for anti to direct that the focus of the company, we’re doing [Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert]’s next movie, [Everything Everywhere All At Once],” Russo explained. “We have a project with the Obama’s, we have a project with Tom Brady, a sports docu. So, we’re, we’re branching out and working with fascinating, thoughtful, super creative people. But, I think, the big focus for us is, ‘What’s the next big event film we’re going to make?'”
