While we wait for the MCU’s Eternals to be released and to feature a prominent same-sex couple, New Mutants is out in April and features a same-sex relationship, according to director Josh Boone. The X-Men spinoff was put off for years after its first trailer and it’s finally being released. While the film is a YA supernatural horror movie, Boone said that there is a “beautiful love story at the heart of it.”
The love story is between Maisie Williams’ Rahne Sinclair and Blu Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar. Boone revealed:
“It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”
Williams notes that the movie is expanding what was touched upon in the comic that The New Mutants is based on, which is the 80s Demon Bear arc.
“Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality,” she explains. “If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”
Williams also made sure to state that this same-sex relationship is not a “gimmick”:
“It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality. It’s not centered around that and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it.”
