Josh Brolin Shares His Thoughts On A Possible Return For ‘The Goonies 2’

Nearly four decades after The Goonies captured hearts with its thrilling adventure and unforgettable characters, rumors of a sequel are swirling again. With Warner Bros. reportedly bringing in a writer and Steven Spielberg attached as producer, the possibility of Goonies 2 feels closer than ever. But not everyone is ready to dive back into the treasure-hunting world of One-Eyed Willy—especially one key star.

A Classic That Stands the Test of Time

Since its 1985 release, The Goonies has remained a beloved staple of 1980s pop culture, blending humor, heart, and high-stakes adventure. The story of a group of misfit kids chasing pirate treasure resonated with audiences then and continues to inspire nostalgia today. The idea of a sequel has lingered for years, with fans eager to see what new adventures await.

Five children are huddled together in an attic, closely examining an old, yellowed map. Various items and wooden beams are visible in the background.

    Josh Brolin’s Surprising Stance

Josh Brolin, who played the protective older brother Brand Walsh in the original film, has built an impressive career with roles in blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Dune. But when asked about returning for Goonies 2 during a recent interview with io9 to promote his upcoming film Weapons, Brolin didn’t exactly jump at the chance.

“I would [have trepidations],” Brolin shared, reflecting on the idea of reprising his role as Brand.

Brolin’s hesitation stems from his deep affection for the original. “It’s been 41 years. Let it lay,” he said, expressing concern that a sequel could overshadow the magic of the 1985 classic. He also questioned the idea of a reboot with new kids, suggesting it might “taint” the original’s legacy.

“Because I love The Goonies, [but] it’s been 41 years. Let it lay. I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don’t know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one.

“I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don’t know, man. I love it just standing like it does.”

What Could a Sequel Look Like?

Despite Brolin’s reservations, the sequel could take various forms. One possibility is a story centered on a new generation of Goonies, exploring a fresh mystery tied to the legend of One-Eyed Willy. Alternatively, the original cast—minus Brolin—could reunite, with Brand’s absence explained by his character’s independent streak in the first film.

Fans are left wondering: Can a sequel capture the same sense of wonder, or is it better to leave the original untouched? Brolin himself summed it up best: “I love it just standing like it does.”

    Why This Matters to Fans

The debate over Goonies 2 highlights the delicate balance between nostalgia and innovation. For many, the original film is a time capsule of childhood adventure, and any sequel risks disrupting that magic. Yet the involvement of Steven Spielberg and the enthusiasm of other cast members offer hope that a new chapter could honor the past while forging a new path.

So, what do you think? Should The Goonies return for another adventure, or is it best left as a one-of-a-kind classic? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
