Some horror fans spend October chasing the moment that sends the popcorn flying. Others would rather know exactly how often a movie is going to spring something on them. A new ranking from GigaCalculator offers a guide to both, placing Insidious: Out of the Further at the top of its list of 2026’s jumpiest horror films.

According to the research summary supplied to GVN, the team assessed 42 horror films released in 2026, recording minor and major jump scares before assigning each movie a score out of 10. Insidious: Out of the Further led the ranking with 30 total jump scares and a score of 9.80, followed closely by Hokum at 9.40.

There is a useful distinction between those two results. Insidious has the most jump scares overall in the published top 10, but Hokum has the most classified as major. If your Halloween watchlist is built around sudden shocks, those are the two titles this ranking puts front and center.

The 10 Jumpiest Horror Movies of 2026, According to GigaCalculator

The researchers describe minor jump scares as smaller jolts and major ones as the bigger, out-of-your-seat moments. The figures below reproduce the supplied ranking, including the tie for sixth place.

    GigaCalculator’s 2026 horror movie jump-scare ranking
Rank Film Minor scares Major scares Total Score /10
    1 Insidious: Out of the Further 23 7 30 9.80
    2 Hokum 10 9 19 9.40
    3 The Mortuary Assistant 12 3 15 6.20
    4 Scream 7 15 2 17 6.00
    5 Undertone 8 3 11 5.70
    6 (tie) Evil Dead Burn 16 1 17 5.50
    6 (tie) The Devil’s Mouth 16 1 17 5.50
    8 Leviticus 3 3 6 5.15
    9 Obsession 8 2 10 5.10
    10 Passenger 12 1 13 5.00

Insidious Leads on Volume, but Hokum Has More Major Scares

With 23 minor scares and seven major ones, Insidious: Out of the Further finishes 11 total jump scares ahead of its closest challenger. That is a substantial lead in a list built around making viewers flinch.

Still, scare counts and a satisfying horror movie are different things. Our Insidious: Out of the Further review found moments of effective imagery and a stronger final act, but took issue with the pacing, writing and lack of sustained dread. A movie can register plenty of individual shocks without keeping the tension alive between them.

Hokum presents a different breakdown: nine of its 19 recorded scares are classified as major, the highest figure in this top 10. Almost half its counted scares fall into that category, compared with seven of 30 for Insidious. You can read our Hokum review for a fuller look at the film beyond the numbers.

The Rest of the Ranking Has a Few Interesting Splits

A person in headphones leans over a desk, distressed, while a screen next to them displays a screaming, menacing face in red tones.

The Mortuary Assistant takes third with 15 total scares, ahead of Scream 7, which has 17. Undertone rounds out the top five with 11. Clearly, the published scores do not simply follow the total number of scares.

Further down, Leviticus has the smallest total in the top 10: six, split evenly between minor and major moments. It nevertheless places above Obsession and Passenger. For readers choosing between the titles, our Obsession review from TIFF offers another perspective on a film that lands ninth here.

Evil Dead Burn and The Devil’s Mouth have identical entries: 16 minor scares, one major scare and a 5.50 score. That puts them level in sixth place, but it does not make either an automatic recommendation for nervous viewers. Seventeen sudden jolts are still seventeen sudden jolts.

What These Jump-Scare Scores Can Tell You

The supplied release does not include the full scoring formula or explain how consistently different researchers classified each scare. Its scores should therefore be read as GigaCalculator’s assessment of the films it studied, rather than a definitive measure of how frightening every viewer will find them.

Jump-scare counts also leave out plenty of what makes horror unsettling: graphic violence, disturbing subject matter, atmosphere and the anticipation of something happening. A lower score is no guarantee of an easier watch, just as a higher score is no guarantee of a better movie.

For a Halloween marathon built around sudden shocks, though, the results offer a clear starting point. Insidious: Out of the Further delivers the highest reported count, while Hokum leads on major scares. Which sounds worse probably depends on how much recovery time you want between them.
