Video Quality
Junk Head comes to Blu-Ray courtesy of Synergetic Distribution with a great 1080p transfer that represents the material very well. Stop-motion animation is one of our favorite artforms, and it is always such a thrill to see all of the subtle facets that go into crafting a whole new world with known materials. The level of detail this transfer reveals honors its occasionally stomach-churning beauty with every intricate and obscene detail on display. The textures of all of the environments look naturally filmic and are complemented with a nice sense of depth.
The movement of the characters and creatures are mostly fluid yet endearingly stilted in moments, and they retain their crisp edges free of streaking. Everything looks homogenous in terms of raw aesthetics for a consistent experience. The colors present in this transfer are not the most vibrant due to the dark and grimy look of the film, but the depth and nuance of the hues are pleasing. Black levels are strong with no serious issue of banding or compression issues. This Blu-Ray provides a fantastic presentation for this piece of adult animation.
Audio Quality
The Blu-Ray comes with a Dolby Digital 2.0 track presented here with burned-in English subtitles to translate the mixture of gibberish language and Japanese. While we would prefer a lossless track, what we are given captures the material pretty well. Traditional dialogue is limited in this feature, so this track leans heavily on building up the world through environmental effects. There are some nifty panning effects in the front channels that add a nice dimension to the experience. The music holds up with a fine fidelity. The track brings forth some subtle activity in the low end when the things get a bit more active, but this is not the standout feature. This track does what it needs to in order to give this enjoyable life.
Special Features

Final Thoughts
Junk Head is an effort that leans into the weirder side of stop-motion animation, and we are here for it. It is not quite as grotesque and opaque as something like Mad God, but it does not operate with kid gloves either. The animation is very detailed and filled with unique facets that make you remember why you appreciate the art form. The story has familiar elements, but they are executed in a way that rarely fails to be entertaining. The feature feels like it could be tightened up slightly, but overall it remains a very inviting film. Synergetic Distribution and MVD Entertainment have offered up a Blu-Ray featuring a pretty good A/V presentation and a welcome supplemental feature. If you like animation that is not appropriate for children, give this a whirl. Recommended
Junk Head will be available to purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD on August 15, 2023.
