In September 2025, we had the pleasure of speaking with award-winning writer Mark Russell about his AHOY Comics one-shot, THANKSGIVING, illustrated by the iconic Mauricet. At the time, we called it a chilling yet socially relevant tale.
Now, Russell and Mauricet are teaming back up for a brand-new nightmare. Arriving on January 27, 2027, KINDERGARTEN GULAG is a darkly humorous and unsettling one-shot described as a disturbing meditation on the innocent things that can hurt us most.
The story follows Igby, a man who wakes up to find himself the lone prisoner in a jail run by five very young, very creepy children who cannot seem to agree on whether they should kill him.
Thanks to our friends at AHOY Comics and the talented Mauricet, we are excited to debut this Jack Kirby-inspired variant cover for the upcoming release. First up is the original Kirby art, followed by Mauricet’s KINDERGARTEN GULAG homage.
KINDERGARTEN GULAG by Mark Russell and Mauricet arrives in stores on January 27, 2027, from AHOY Comics.
Senior Writer at GeekVibesNation – I am a 60 something child of the 70’s who admits to being a Star Trek/Star Wars/Comic Book junkie who once dove headfirst over a cliff (Ok, it was a small hill) to try to rescue his Fantastic Four comic from a watery grave. I am married to a lovely woman who is as crazy as I am and the proud parent of a 21-year-old young man with autism. My wife and son are my real heroes.
