Lionsgate is Locating to Downtown Yonkers; Hollywood in Westchester, but Will Rent Go Up?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”29242″ img_size=”932×470″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]My fellow Yonkers residents, Hollywood is coming to us. It’s been recently been announced that the movie production studio Lionsgate is coming to downtown Yonkers in a $100 million production facility that will be built.

Mayor Mike Spano commented on this announcement:

“The investment, the building, the jobs increased, revenue to the tax base, I couldn’t be more proud, so excited its going in.”

This isn’t the first time Yonkers has been the center of filming. Plenty of movies, TV shows, and the like have been on set in Yonkers, as well as the city having been mentioned throughout the years in cinema. HBO produced a miniseries a few years ago called Show Me a Hero which starred Oscar Isaac and caused Yonkers to take in $200,000 in revenue.

Spano continued:

“In 2011 there were two days when they filmed something in the city, now were seeing as many as 400 plus days of filming all across Yonkers and across Westchester.”

Lionsgate will have five giant sound stages as well as a fully operational backlot, which will be 180,000 square feet in total.

Spano commented on the development in downtown Yonkers:

“I think people are proud when they see their city highlighted in films, when they see city hall, hundreds of times. There’s a great opportunity for the taxpayer here, at the same time it’s a lot of fun.”

As someone who lives in this area, I’m excited at the possibilities this can bring. I’m a movie fanatic and to have my area deemed worthy enough for a huge movie production to locate to is amazing. Like many, though; I can’t help, but be a little concerned about the possibility of rent hikes. Anyone who lives near the trains knows how expensive it already is considering the location and how close we are to New York City. With a major company like Lionsgate coming in, will residents be forced out of the neighborhood?

Let us know what you think!
