Six strangers meet at an underground sex club in Japan for a night of anonymous pleasure. While first-timers and regulars collide, each member’s attitude towards sex and satisfaction becomes challenged as their kinks and inhibitions begin to reveal more than they were initially willing to let on.

Adapted from the critically acclaimed play of the same name, LOVE’S WHIRLPOOL explores Japan’s fuzoku (sex industry) with candor, humor and freewheeling indecency. “Stylishly shot and explicit,” Daisuke Miura’s foray into the city’s erotic underbelly provides “great thrills, both erotic and comedic, as well as genuine emotion” (Screen Anarchy).

    Video Quality

Love’s Whirlpool arrives on Blu-Ray courtesy of Film Movement with a fetching 1080p presentation that perfectly represents this film. This is a modest production in terms of locations, as it takes place almost entirely inside one apartment, but there is a ton of detail packed within this space. There is a pleasing amount of texture in close-up shots of the clothing (or lack thereof) and production design. Skin tones look natural, and there are some palpable characteristics on display such as perspiration while characters are in the throes of passion. Colors are faithfully saturated with some complex colors coming alive in the background and emanating from the light sources. Black levels hold steady with no crush observed, and highlights avoid blooming. Compression artifacts and other digital anomalies are not an issue throughout. The film looks amazing in high definition.

    Audio Quality

The Blu-Ray comes with an LPCM 2.0 track and a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track in the original Japanese (with optional English subtitles) that are in good shape. This primarily dialogue-driven endeavor flourishes without any moments getting hindered in clarity. The interior spaces do not have too much going on outside of conversations, but the room tone is captured as needed. The track comes alive with subtle sounds of moaning coming from adjacent rooms. Environmental sounds come through effortlessly, and dialogue is crisp and clear without being overshadowed by the music or sound effects. There is some subtle texture in the low end but it does not attempt to be a standout in that regard. This track does a very fine job of bringing this to life.

    Final Thoughts

Love’s Whirlpool is a film with a premise that sounds ripe for the exploitation subgenre, but there is much more on this film’s mind than sex. The story uses the desire for such mortal pleasures as a gateway to get to know these eight characters. By knowing their desires and how they function within a group dynamic, you can get a glimpse of who they really are once any artifice is stripped away. These conversations and evolving relationships are quite transfixing, and when sexuality is depicted on screen, it goes towards adding layers to the characters. It is an amazing surprise that should not be overlooked. Film Movement has provided a Blu-Ray with a favorable A/V presentation along with a brief supplement. Don’t let the subject matter scare you off; this is a terrific discovery. Recommended

Love’s Whirlpool is currently available to purchase on Standard Edition Blu-Ray or with a Limited Edition Slipcover exclusively through Vinegar Syndrome.
