Pirkkanen’s performance is essential to this film working. He plays an unsuspecting hero. Bespectacled and far from physically imposing, the audience can immediately identify with Isaac. At first, he starts uncertain and shaken and progresses into a fighter prepared to sacrifice all. His take is nuanced. One minute, he is a fearless, headstrong individual. The next, he is reflective and stoic. It is a perfect balance for a character armed only with a crowbar and the power of belief.
Isaac being a scientist is not an uncommon trope for the main character in a sci-fi story. The twist in this particular story is the inclusion of an urban setting. Having the story take place in upstate New York gives it a more grounded quality. In addition to the low budget, the film has an influential 70s/80s vibe, which only adds to its mystique and wonder.

An essential component of the story is a mystery. Nonlinear storytelling is compelling here, allowing the audience to join Isaac’s journey. He is unraveling what happened to Sue, making his ultimate discovery, along with the audience – a worthwhile ride. These two twins are connected, and as an added element, Isaac appears to be the only one who realizes she is missing and, therefore, becomes the only one capable of finding her. This fact allows the character of Tim (Nick Dennings) to act as the audience, at first confused by Issac’s actions but curious to see how his journey progresses.

The music is one of the standout elements of this endeavor. It acts like a character, using techno-heavy and 80s-infused choice vibes with this gritty indie effort. The quality of the tunes elevates the project from its low-budget production into a spectacle that is on par with any multi-million dollar project. In addition to the music, the cinematography is show-stopping. From the sweeping tracking shots to the close-up that reveals the slight urban decay, there is a beauty reminiscent of It Follows when watching this film. Tonally, they are two different movies, but they are similar in their indie statures. No matter the budget, if there is a captivating story and heartfelt effort, it will shine through on the screen.
This movie is a must-watch for any sci-fi fan, but especially for cinephiles. The expert craftsmanship and unique story make this worth a watch or two. Lunamancer is a promising start for Mucci. He casts suspense and intrigue on a shoestring budget while delivering thrills and an immersive ride on par with a grand spectacle.
