Matthew McConaughey, Chris Pine, and Woody Harrelson Among Its Short-List For The Role of “Sully” In Sony-Columbia’s ‘Uncharted”

When Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Uncharted game series first made it’s appearance on our gaming screens in 2007, it was a natural for future film development. Much like Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Nathan Drake, the Indiana Jones-like hero is finally making the leap from the video game console to the big screen.  Finally, after a long time in development, the film will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg  with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers star Tom Holland as the title character. Now, That Hashtag Show reveals some new details, including the apparent short list to play Drake’s mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.

It is thought that Uncharted will loosely follow the plot of 2007’s Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. The way that game goes is Nathan Drake, who is a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, is in the search for El Dorado, the lost city of gold (aren’t we all?). This will be Drake’s official origin story, and if all goes as Sony-Columbia hopes, the first of a series of films. As per the character description: Nathan Drake, is “edgy, intellectual, focused as hell, but also complete isolated….” That makes him “the perfect protégé for Sully”, but his sense of isolation “leads him to chase risk and make sometimes reckless decisions.”

As for the character of Sully, it is being reported that the studio is looking for a Caucasian male, 40-49. This makes the short list for the Uncharted character to include some of Hollywood’s current, big name, lead actors.  Among them is Holland’s Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame co-star Chris Hemsworth, along with Matthew McConaughey, Wonder Woman 1984’s Chris Pine, and Woody Harrelson. The description for the character from the studio goes as follows:

Rugged and handsome, equal parts refinement and contagious charm, Sully is the kind of guy who turns heads when he walks into the room. Sully is a highly skilled career criminal – he knows how to read a room quickly and impressively, and nothing gets past him. He becomes Nate’s mentor and teaches him everything he knows, helping mold him from a small-time pickpocket into a skilled thief. Sully has a fun banter with Nate, and though at moments he feels like a father figure to him, in truth he is self-interested above all else. Sully does care for Nate, and goes against his instincts to save him in the end.

This description could easily be played any of these A-list talents with perhaps, due to age and experience leaning toward McConaughey or Harrelson. In any event, with a production start of July of this year, the decision will be coming soon. Who would you like to see portray “Sully” along with Tom Holland as Nathan Drake?
