A woman with long dark hair and a bloodstained shirt sits indoors, looking serious, with a dark background and a strand of hair falling over her face.

In this horror cult classic from writer-director Lucky McKee, May (Angela Bettis) is a socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and an obsession with perfection. Never really fitting in, she grew up wearing a pirate’s patch, and her sole companion continues to be a perfectly kept doll — until she meets handsome Adam (Jeremy Sisto) and his beautiful hands. As May’s relationships with Adam and an alluring colleague (Anna Faris) descend into depravity, she soon finds out that people are not 100% perfect — only certain parts of them are.

    Video Quality

May debuts domestically on Blu-Ray courtesy of Lionsgate which looks quite good despite the wish that this could be a 4K UHD Blu-Ray. We are not completely certain of the provenance of the master, but we would guess this is the same master utilized by Second Sight when they released the title on Blu-Ray overseas in 2023. This transfer does a fine job of retaining its organic filmic qualities. The transfer has notable clarity throughout with memorable flourishes in the production design and makeup effects. The practical effects are suitably upsetting as things progress. Color saturation is respectable with the autumnal color palette capturing the various locales with the appropriate richness. Skin tones are natural to the lighting conditions, although exposed skin has a way of finding blood dripping down it on occasion. Black levels are acceptable yet succumb to the occasional digital noise and fleeting banding. Overall, Lionsgate Home Entertainment has done solid work here.

    Audio Quality

Lionsgate brings May to Blu-Ray with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that translates the soundscape with a pleasing consistency. Dialogue comes through clearly with no vital information clipped by the sound effects. The soundtrack flows through the room with nice fidelity. This is not the most action-packed film, but there is some texture in the low end when it is narratively appropriate. The movie uses environmental sounds to great effect, and the track retains strong detail even in the wildest developments. This track delivers everything you need from it. Optional English, English SDH, and Spanish subtitles are provided.

    Final Thoughts

May is a favorable mixture of an atypical character study with violent revenge fantasy. The lead performance from Angela Bettis should have guaranteed her juicy roles ever since, but the industry seemingly has not given her the opportunities she deserves. The rest of the ensemble is likewise very talented, especially Anna Faris in a mode that made us fall in love with her. The movie is awkward, sweet, horrific, and so much more that makes for a memorable viewing experience. If you are a horror fan who has not watched this one yet, you are missing out. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has delivered a new Blu-Ray release as a part of their Vestron Video line featuring a worthy A/V presentation and an impressive selection of special features. If you are a fan, the wait for an HD release in the US has been worth it. Recommended

May is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray exclusively at Lionsgate Limited.
