When Toula (Vardalos) plans a trip to Greece to honor her late father Gus’ (Michael Constantine, The Juror) final wish, the family’s reunion becomes complicated with the reveal of a deep family secret. With non-stop laughter at every twist and turn, the highly anticipated third installment of the franchise brings a heartwarming reunion that honors the essence of what makes the original so unique.

For in-depth thoughts on My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, please see my colleague Jeffrey Peterson’s review from its original theatrical release here.

    Video Quality

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment brings My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 to Blu-Ray in its original 2.39:1 with a lovely 1080p video presentation that encapsulates this journey perfectly. The image is vibrant and detailed with the splashy color palette of Greece radiating off the screen. The film captures vivid colors within the locales, clothing, and production design, which provides a great deal of enjoyment. Highlights are firm with no blooming at play. The black levels are deep and nuanced, but digital noise does prove to be a fleeting issue in a handful of moments.

The skin tones are natural with gentle nuances showcased well in close-ups and medium shots. The presentation provides a sumptuous amount of depth on display, especially when contrasted with the architecture on display. The details of each location are always a treat under all conditions. The film has a natural aesthetic which is translated well on disc. This is as grand of a presentation as any modern movie should provide on Blu-Ray. Universal has treated this one well.

    Audio Quality

The Blu-Ray comes with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that showcases this journey in a fetching manner. The sounds of travel through the country provide a good amount of activity in the rear channels, and music and other kinetic moments add some extra texture in the low end. The score and soundtrack do an amiable job of establishing the mood of the narrative, and this track fills the room in an immersive way. Dialogue comes through clearly without ever falling victim to overlapping voices within the family or other environmental noises. Everything is mixed precisely with directionality carefully deployed across the channels. Universal has done a really swell job with this one. There are optional English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles provided.

    Special Features

    • Audio Commentary: Writer/Director/Star Nia Vardalos provides a light and informative commentary track in which she shows off her immense passion for the series by discussing this next chapter in the story, the location shooting, her feelings about her fellow performers, and much more that is pleasant to hear even with a few lulls.
    • Gag Reel: A nearly eight-minute collection of amusing moments from the set, flubbed lines, laughing fits, and more.
    • Deleted and Extended Scenes: A two-minute collection of unused moments is provided here which offers nothing too substantial.
    • On Set with Nia Vardalos: A three-and-a-half-minute piece that looks at the star stepping behind the camera and shaping the story.
    • Opa! The Making of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3: A seven-minute featurette that takes a look at the reunion of the performers, what their characters are up to, the details they bring to their characters, the atmosphere on set, the new setting, and more.
    • Wedding Drum Song – Extended Take: A minute-long extended version of the song featured in the film.

    Final Thoughts

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is a pleasant enough outing with a family that has been charming us for a couple of decades at this point. The series seems incapable of capturing the magic of the original film, but it offers a decent amount of laughs and heart as a slice of adult-skewing entertainment. This entry improves upon the previous effort, but the story tries to service way too many characters in a very short time span, leaving many storylines to feel threadbare or inconsequential. Universal Picture Home Entertainment has released a Blu-Ray that delivers a really good A/V presentation and a few brief special features. This will serve as passable entertainment for established fans of the franchise, but newcomers will likely find this to be a lacking experience.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will be available to purchase on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital on October 31, 2023.
