Netflix’s Lupin: A Thrilling Must-See Show

Lupin GVN

The story of a gentleman thief creatively and successfully evading the law has been done before. The very story the Netflix show is named after is all about being a master of deception. However, ‘Lupin’ is such a thrilling series that keeps you on your toes that you feel as if you haven’t seen these tricks before. The last Netflix series that made me this exhilarated was The Queen’s Gambit. What I’m trying to say is, Lupin is smart, crafty, and incredibly addictive. If you aren’t watching it, stop what you’re doing and watch it now.

Omar Sy Excels As Assane Diop

Lupin is a French-speaking thriller that follows Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy) as he pulls out every trick in the book to clear his deceased father’s name. At times, Lupin is so tragic, but artfully done at the same time. Omar captures everything an actor should if they are playing a gentleman thief. As Assane, he perfectly deceives the audience. You never truly know who Assane is or what his motives are. The starts off with you having one image of Assane, but you come to find out that the point is for you to never truly know who he really is. Sy is so believable as Assane.

The nods and mentions to the book Lupin are frequent and relative to the plot of the show. They give hints along the way – you just have to pay attention to pick them up. At the same time, these mentions don’t become repetitive and you never feel that the series is lazy due to them borrowing things from the book. This is a part of Assane’s character – he has based his life on Lupin. And it’s both his recipe for success and disaster.

Rating: 5/5

There are real consequences in this show, no matter how far ahead Assane gets at times. He’s smart and is usually two or three steps ahead of everyone. When he isn’t, the repercussions are shocking and monumental. The show is incredibly clever. the pacing knows when to take breaks so it isn’t suffocatingly congested, but there’s never an unbearably slow moment. Every character lends themselves perfectly to Assane, who is the orchestrator of everything. It’s such an incredibly enjoyable series. I love the writing, the acting, the pace, the locations – just everything.

Have you watched Lupin yet? Who else is excited for part two?
