New Pictures Show Steve Spielberg’s Musical Movie Remake of West Side Story

“When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way.”

A lot of movies have been delaying their theatrical releases, but not Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. The movie musical still holds the December 2020 release date that it had and since we don’t have a lot to look forward to in the near future, let’s check out some details for this movie that’s still a good amount of time away.

EW, by way of Vanity Fair; has released some new photos of Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria.

Spielberg stated:

“This story is not only a product of its time, but that time has returned, and it’s returned with a kind of social fury. I really wanted to tell that Puerto Rican, Nuyorican experience of basically the migration to this country and the struggle to make a living, and to have children, and to battle against the obstacles of xenophobia and racial prejudice.”

While West Side Story is probably one of the most well-known and loved musicals out there, there were some flaws in the 1961 musical movie. Rita Moreno played Anita in the original movie and returns as a new role, Valentina. Moreno explains what Spielberg changed from the original film, including the fact that the original didn’t really have any Puerto Rican actors – considering the film is about a white gang vs a Puerto Rican gang.

She explains:

“I don’t know if that’s…yes, that’s fair, because the [1961] film had a lot of things that were wrong with it, aside from the fact that it had a lot of things that were very right. That’s what they were trying to fix and ameliorate and I think they have done an incredible job.”
