Ninja Wars (original title: Iga Ninpōchō) is a dark, supernatural action film set in feudal Japan, blending ninja lore with horror and fantasy elements.
The story follows Jotaro, a wandering ninja who becomes entangled in a deadly conflict between rival clans after a brutal massacre wipes out his comrades. As he investigates, he discovers that the violence is tied to a sinister conspiracy involving a demonic sect seeking power through forbidden rituals. This group employs grotesque, otherworldly abilities–blurring the line between human and monster–to eliminate their enemies and dominate the region.
Jotaro joins forces with a mysterious female survivor whose own past is steeped in tragedy and vengeance. Together, they confront increasingly bizarre and terrifying foes, each wielding unnatural powers. As the battles escalate, Jotaro must rely not only on his physical skill but also on inner resolve to resist corruption and defeat the dark forces threatening to consume the land.
The film is known for its stylized violence, eerie atmosphere, and imaginative (often shocking) supernatural elements, making it a standout entry in early 1980s Japanese genre cinema.

Video Quality
Ninja Wars comes to Blu-Ray with a 1080p master in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio restored in 4K from a 2022 master prepared by Kadokawa, who supplied it to Toy Robot Video. The label continues the level of quality provided by Arrow Video in recent years, and the results are a welcome sight for martial arts fans. While certain aspects might have been enhanced if Toy Robot Video had more of a hand in the restoration process, the image is quite enjoyable all around. The color palette saturates the screen with a natural beauty that unlocks the nuances of the costumes, production design, and natural environment.
You will find a robust amount of fine detail in close-up shots that allow you to see subtle facial details and facets of the production design and clothing. Things get slightly less sharp in the medium and long shots, with some moments looking more crisp than others. While there are elements that could likely be fine-tuned and imperfections are visible intermittently, the level of damage and wear and tear is very low. The film does not exhibit any ugly compression artifacts or egregious issues with the framing. Black levels remain firm with no crush observed. Toy Robot Video has established a strong precedent with this initial release.
Audio Quality
This Blu-Ray presents the film with a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track in the original Japanese that sounds very good. The stylized sounds of fighting are one of the most prominent and pleasing elements of the soundscape. While there are some expected instances of age-related wear and tear, the score largely maintains a pleasing fidelity. Dialogue sporadically takes on a somewhat hollow quality, but the information is usually clear in most environments. There are limitations to the source, but the listening experience stands out as well as it can. Toy Robot Video has maintained a fine standard for this one. This release has optional English subtitles provided.

Final Thoughts
Ninja Wars finds the great Hiroyuki Sanada luring us in with another tale of violence and intrigue, and this time there are some supernatural flourishes to really shake you out of complacency. The choreography is impeccable, with everyone drawing upon the training to deliver when the moment calls for it. The story beats are more than a bit familiar, but the movie executes them so well that we cannot be mad at it. The genre can feel a bit stale when you watch too many in a short period of time, but this is one that will revitalize you and have you hungry for more. Toy Robot Video has released a Blu-Ray featuring a solid A/V presentation and a nice sampling of special features. Recommended
