For the week of August 11th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week, in the world of new theatrical films, we have the blockbuster biopic Michael on 4K UHD Blu-Ray courtesy of Lionsgate. The film arrives in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio and an array of supplemental features, including an hour-long making-of documentary. On the opposite side of the budgetary spectrum, Music Box Films has the intimate adaptation of The Stranger from director François Ozon on Blu-Ray. The release comes with interviews, deleted scenes, and more.
Horror fans are in for a treat with the long-awaited 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of Barbarian from director Zach Cregger. 20th Century Studios brings this one to physical media in a SteelBook with Dolby Vision and special features such as a commentary track, deleted scenes, and more.
It is a huge month for Vinegar Syndrome and OCN Distribution releases as we dive into an array of 4K UHD and Blu-Ray releases from some of our favorite sublabels and partner labels. First up, Vinegar Syndrome Pictures has the recent psychosexual debut I Live Here Now from Julie Pacino on Blu-Ray, which includes multiple Q&As, a commentary track, and more. Going a bit further back in the vault, Cinematographe comes through with a 4K UHD Blu-Ray update of 54 starring Ryan Phillippe, Salma Hayek, Neve Campbell, and Mike Myers. The ’90s drama about Studio 54 has had its Theatrical Cut newly restored in 4K from the Original Camera Negative and is presented with Dolby Vision. The release also includes the dramatically different Director’s Cut on Blu-Ray from a previous HD master. The release is packed with supplements, including commentary tracks, interviews, video essays, and more.
Circle Collective brings the period indie drama An American Affair to Blu-Ray with some deleted scenes. The film stars Gretchen Mol as a woman having an affair with JFK who develops a unique dynamic with her teenage next-door neighbor. Muscle has the buzzy follow-up of the queer epic Castration Movie Anthology II. The Best of Both Worlds from director Louise Weard. The two-disc release is packed with special features including three commentary tracks, a Q&A, and so much more.
There are a couple of documentaries worth seeking out, including Boutique: To Preserve and Collect from ETR Media. This must-have Blu-Ray for physical media fans has a commentary track, short films, and more. Those who have an interest in (or are concerned by) true crime need to look into Citizen Sleuth on Blu-Ray from Dark Sky. This film takes a look at the slippery slope that can occur when you start viewing murder as entertainment or something to be exploited. The release includes a commentary track.
Those who love international cinema can check out the cultural satire Dead Pigs on Blu-Ray from Film Movement, which includes a commentary track with director Cathy Yan. The label also has the action-packed prison survival film Jailbreak hitting Blu-Ray with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and more. The Lebanese drama The Razor’s Edge has been rescued by Several Futures with a 4K restoration presented on Blu-Ray alongside a selection of short films.
Indie horror fans have more than a few options this month, including the Australian possession film The Demon Disorder, which really leans into body horror. The Blu-Ray includes a commentary track, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. You also have the unconventional werewolf tale Good Manners on Blu-Ray from Icarus Films, which has a pair of commentary tracks. If you want something disgusting yet lighthearted, Yellow Veil Pictures has the sci-fi dark comedy Touch Me on Blu-Ray with two commentary tracks, interviews, and more.
