For the week of August 12th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week, we explore titles from some of our favorite boutique labels, plus an exciting slate of new releases and overlooked older gems from the Warner Archive. First up, Lionsgate Limited has the crime thriller The Way of the Gun starring Ryan Phillippe and Benicio del Toro debuting on 4K UHD Blu-Ray restored from the original 35mm camera negative in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos. The release comes with new and archival special features including two commentary tracks, interviews, and more. The label also has another addition to their Vestron Collector’s Series line as the comedy All of Me starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin heads to Blu-Ray with a new commentary track, interviews, video essays, and more.
Shout! Studios comes to play this week with the hotly anticipated release of Blaxploitation Classics: Volume 2 featuring six films restored from the original camera negatives on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision. The release includes Foxy Brown, Friday Foster, Cotton Comes to Harlem, Bucktown, Slaughter, and Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off. There are supplemental features including a commentary track and interviews for Foxy Brown and a new documentary on the blaxploitation genre.
The team at the Warner Archive has a dazzling slate of new Blu-Ray releases this month. The blaxploitation exploits continue with the release of Melinda starring Calvin Lockhart and Rosalind Cash. The new Blu-Ray release comes from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative. If you need something a bit more lighthearted, the quaint comedy Two Weeks with Love starring Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds arrives on Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Technicolor Negative. The release comes with cartoons, shorts, and a special on Powell.
Fans of classic Hollywood melodrama will want to pay attention to Bright Leaf from director Michael Curtiz starring Gary Cooper, Lauren Bacall and Patricia Neal. The new Blu-Ray release comes from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative with a pair of cartoons. There is also the Vincente Minnelli drama The Cobweb starring Richard Widmark, Lauren Bacall, Charles Boyer, and Gloria Grahame on Blu-Ray derived from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative along with shorts and cartoons.
There are plenty of historical dramas on the slate including They Died with Their Boots On starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland on Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative with plenty of archival supplements. We also have the 1952 adaptation of The Prisoner of Zenda starring Stewart Granger, Deborah Kerr, and James Mason on Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Technicolor Negative. As a bonus, the 1922 silent version of the film is included alongside some radio adaptations. The Arthurian legend gets a big screen adaptation with Knights of the Round Table starring Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner on Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative.
