For the week of August 19th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week, we spotlight the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of the comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail from Sony. The release comes with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio along with the original audio options. The release is packed with supplements including the VHS version of the film in HD, a new retrospective, two commentary tracks, and loads of archival featurettes. The laughs keep flowing as The 40-Year-Old Virgin debuts on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from Universal. The film gets a highly requested upgrade of both the theatrical cut and the unrated cut in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. There is a nearly hour-long new retrospective panel plus all of the previous archival features.
The heroes at The Criterion Collection have a trio of wonderful international titles this month. First, we have the Oscar-winning drama Shoeshine from director Vittorio De Sica hitting 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a new 4K restoration of the best surviving elements in SDR. The release includes a documentary on the 70th anniversary of the film, interviews, and more. The label also has The Burmese Harp and Fires on the Plain from director Kon Ichikawa debuting on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in SDR from new restorations. These two releases include interviews, featurettes, and more.
The folks at Shout! Studios and Scream Factory have some 4K UHD Blu-Ray releases to admire. Vin Diesel returns once again to his antihero roots in Riddick with a 4K restoration in Dolby Vision supervised and approved by director David Twohy. The release comes with both the theatrical and unrated versions of the film, plus some new interviews with the talent and legacy features. We stay in the sci-fi realm with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie. The 4K transfer is presented in Dolby Vision with two commentary tracks, featurettes, and more. The period journey Aguirre, The Wrath of God from director Werner Herzog has been restored in 4K from the Original 35mm Camera Negative in Dolby Vision with German and English-language options. Al Pacino won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Scent of a Woman, newly scanned in 4K from the Original 35mm Camera Negative in Dolby Vision as approved by director Martin Brest. You get two new in-depth interviews well worth your time.
Fans of Japanese cinema can look to Cult Epics and their release of the interpersonal motorcycle drama His Motorbike, Her Island on Blu-Ray which includes a commentary track, two video essays, and more. There are also some cool Hong Kong titles in play over at Eureka Entertainment with their release of Martial Law: Lo Wei’s Wuxia World featuring Black Butterfly, Death Valley, and Vengeance of a Snow Girl. Each film has been given a commentary track to accompany an interview piece.
The good people at Kino Lorber Studio Classics continue to deliver an eclectic slate every month. Comedy fans can celebrate the 4K UHD Blu-Ray upgrade of Happy Gilmore starring Adam Sandler, derived from a 6K scan of the Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision with a commentary track, deleted scenes, and more. This is not the only 4K UHD upgrade as Coneheads starring Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin gets a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision with a commentary track, interviews, and more. The cult musical Xanadu starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly has been given a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision with four commentary tracks, multiple audio options, and more.
