For the week of December 16th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week, we spotlight the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ original comedy series Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Juno Temple. The first three seasons arrive in Dolby Vision for all 34 episodes, but there are no special features included.
The heroes at The Criterion Collection have a dazzling slate of new releases this month. The big headline to close out the year is the revival of the Eclipse line, starting with the release of Abbas Kiarostami—Early Shorts and Features on Blu-Ray. The release features 17 works from the great Iranian filmmaker newly restored in 2K. Talking Heads fans are in good spirits with the release of the amazing performance film David Byrne’s American Utopia from director Spike Lee. The new 4K UHD Blu-Ray is presented in SDR with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track and new special features, including an hour-long making-of documentary.
Fans of classic Hollywood films have a pair of titles to celebrate. The notorious Howard Hughes aerial drama Hell’s Angels, featuring an early starring role for Jean Harlow, arrives on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a new 4K restoration of the roadshow version of the film in SDR and new interviews with film historians. We also have the sweeping Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger romance I Know Where I’m Going! on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative courtesy of the BFI. The release is presented in SDR and comes with a commentary track, a documentary, and more.
The fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome and OCN Distribution have an exciting slate of mainline and Partner Label titles on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray this month. First up from the recent Black Friday slate is the Nacho Vigalondo sci-fi thriller Timecrimes on 4K UHD Blu-Ray. The release has been remastered in 4K with Dolby Vision and has been given three commentary tracks, interviews, visual essays, and more. The Dario Argento crime thriller The Stendhal Syndrome starring Asia Argento gets a 4K UHD upgrade from a new scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision. The release has a commentary track and tons of interviews. The crime drama Blue City starring Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy gets a new 4K restoration on Blu-Ray. Vinegar Syndrome has given this title a commentary track, interviews, and a video essay.
Over at Cinematographe, we have the crime drama At Close Range starring Sean Penn and Christopher Walken on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision. The special features include two commentary tracks, new interviews, and more. They also have the domestic Blu-Ray debut of New Rose Hotel from legendary filmmaker Abel Ferrara starring Walken and Willem Dafoe. The release comes from a 2K restoration of the 35mm interpositive and an array of supplements including a commentary track, interviews, a visual essay, and more.
A new partner label joins the family as Seventy-Seven debuts the British drama Bronco Bullfrog on Blu-Ray newly restored in 2K with a giant slate of special features. Also new to the fold is Bizarro and their release of A Candle for the Devil on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative in HDR10. Glass Eye Pix has a horror oddity debuting on Blu-Ray with Satan Hates You featuring a commentary track and some holiday horror short films. Wild Eye Releasing has the ambitious, low-budget body-swapping thriller Asylum of Darkness hitting Blu-Ray with a cavalcade of special features.
Cartuna has a hilarious trio of films with The Reveries Trilogy on Blu-Ray with a commentary track for each film. This is not the only multi-film collection, as The Left Behind Daughters Trilogy: The Films of Huang Ji and Ryuji Otsuka featuring Egg and Stone, The Foolish Bird, and Stonewalling hits Blu-Ray from KimStim. The mainline of Film Movement has the Japanese coming-of-age boxing drama 100 Yen Love hitting Blu-Ray with a making-of documentary. Film Movement Classics has the double feature Courtesans & Criminals: The Underworld of Hideo Gosha on Blu-Ray featuring Onimasa and Tokyo Bordello. The label also has its first 4K UHD Blu-Ray with the wartime classic The Dam Busters remastered in HDR10 with an entire disc dedicated to special features.
