For the week of December 17th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week we spotlight a long-awaited 4K UHD Blu-Ray upgrade as Willow finally gets a loving release from Disney. The impressive 4K master is presented in Dolby Vision with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track. The set comes with an archival commentary track, making-of featurettes, and more fans will not want to miss.
This is not the only family friendly release as the critically-acclaimed Transformers One arrives on 4K UHD Blu-Ray fresh from theaters with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. There are an array of featurettes includes along with an optional SteelBook variant. Elsewhere in the land of new releases, Warner Bros. is bringing the highly divisive sequel Joker Folie à Deux to 4K UHD Blu-Ray with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. The release also comes with a multi-part making of documentary.
It is a huge week for The Criterion Collection as they pull out the big guns just in time for the holiday season. One of the biggest releases of the year is the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of Paris, Texas from a new 4K restoration in Dolby Vision. The release includes all of the previously released supplemental material including a commentary track, interviews, making-of documentaries, and more. The landmark Italian opus 8 1/2 debuts on 4K UHD courtesy of director Federico Fellini. The new release comes in SDR with the original mono track along with loads of supplemental material. The great Sammo Hung lands another title in the collection with the Blu-Ray release of Eastern Condors featuring two versions of the film, new and archival interviews, and more.
The good folks at Deaf Crocodile have once again proven why they are one of the best in the game with a pair of nearly forgotten gems hitting physical media. The label takes another foray into the world of 4K UHD with the violent animated noir Felidae. The film is newly remastered in 4K with Dolby Vision and packed with special features including a commentary track, new interviews, and more. We also have the Czech fairy tale The Golden Fern newly remastered with a slew of special features including a commentary track, new interviews, and rare short films.
Arrow Video brings the indie horror outing The Last Video Store to Blu-Ray with a slew of special features including a commentary track, multiple visual essays, a making-of featurette, early unfinished versions of the movie, and more. This one is a love letter to the video stores that help shape your early interest in movies. Radiance Films brings things over to neonoir side of the spectrum with Yokohama BJ Blues which puts its own spin on The Long Goodbye. The new Blu-Ray has some cool special features and a solid A/V presentation.
The fine folks at OCN Distribution have an exciting slate of Partner Label titles on Blu-Ray this month that offers a little something for everyone. Cartuna brings forth the hilarious indie sensation Hundreds of Beavers to Blu-Ray in a 2-disc set loaded with special features. Film Movement Classics offers a crime outing from Hideo Gosha with the blistering Cash Calls Hell. They also have the music-driven road movie Candy Mountain which includes appearances from numerous music legends. Yellow Veil Pictures has the eerie Gothic tale Sweet Sweet Lonely Girl which has a queer undercurrent.
Memory has the pitch black coming-of-age tale Hippo which instantly shot up our list of favorite movies from this year. One of our favorite labels Shudder is trying to make us squirm with the utterly disgusting Flying Lotus debut Kuso on Blu-Ray. This one has a new commentary track and a new interview with the director. ETR Media brings us yet another interesting documentary as Chris Claremont’s X-Men attempts to insure that a major artist is not forgotten.
