Looking at recent theatrical releases, Searchlight Pictures has the newest entry in the Super Troopers universe as Super Troopers 3 arrives on Blu-Ray with bloopers, deleted scenes, and featurettes. Heading more into the arthouse side of cinematic offerings, Magnolia Pictures has Late Fame on Blu-Ray starring Willem Dafoe as an unknown poet discovered decades after his work was published by co-star Greta Lee and her cohorts. Master auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda brings his latest sci-fi tale Sheep in the Box to Blu-Ray courtesy of NEON, which follows a couple who mourn the death of their son by bringing in an artificial replacement for him. AI weaves its way into the fabric of the post-apocalyptic Hot Spot starring Noomi Rapace from Universal on Blu-Ray. This title comes with a smattering of featurettes.
Lionsgate has a pair of titles from their Lionsgate Limited line that are perfect additions to spooky season. First up, there is the landmark found footage film The Blair Witch Project on Blu-Ray in a new Collector’s Edition package that includes the option to watch the film in three different versions, including a newly remastered version created by Second Sight. The release is loaded with commentary tracks, interviews, documentaries, and more. They also have the cult oddity Repo! The Genetic Opera debuting on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a new 4K remaster in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. The release is stuffed with supplements, including a new 2-hour documentary on the creation and legacy of the movie and a fresh commentary track from the creative team. The Lionsgate team has also given a 4K UHD upgrade to Never Let Go starring Halle Berry with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio.
The team at the Warner Archive has a dazzling slate of new 4K UHD and Blu-Ray releases this month. We start the month with their latest 4K UHD Blu-Ray release, the Oscar-winning romantic epic Ryan’s Daughter from director David Lean, which has been newly restored from an 8K scan of the 65mm Original Camera Negative. The release is presented in Dolby Vision with a new DTS 5.1 mix and the original 5.0 audio, along with a commentary track and a documentary.
It’s a great month for anyone who loves Golden Age stars. Bette Davis provides a layered performance in Mr. Skeffington alongside Claude Rains, a drama about a much-desired woman who marries for convenience over love. Complicated marriages continue with Greer Garson in That Forsyte Woman alongside Errol Flynn, Walter Pidgeon, Robert Young and Janet Leigh. Romance is a bit more lighthearted in the Ernst Lubitsch adaptation of The Merry Widow starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald. The release includes an alternate French-language production of the film. We take to the schools in the Glenn Ford teacher drama Blackboard Jungle. All of these films have been restored in 4K with a selection of supplements, including shorts, radio plays, and more.
The label has some comedic outings, including a double dose of William Powell debuting on Blu-Ray. First up, Powell stars in the Pre-Code heist effort Jewel Robbery alongside Kay Francis, followed by a reunion with his Thin Man cohort Myrna Loy in Love Crazy about a married couple on the verge of getting divorced. Clark Gable takes on the world of advertising in The Hucksters with Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner. All of these films have been restored in 4K and come with special features. We are also getting Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: The Complete Series on Blu-Ray featuring all 22 episodes from the Aaron Sorkin series.
