For the week of October 7th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week, we explore fresh theatrical outings, beloved catalog favorites upgraded to 4K UHD, plus an exciting slate of gems from Kino Lorber. First up, Paramount has the action-packed conclusion Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning starring Tom Cruise arriving on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos. The release comes with three commentary tracks, a making-of documentary, featurettes, and more. The studio also has the family film Smurfs featuring the vocal talents of Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, and more on Blu-Ray. The release comes with Dolby Atmos audio and a handful of featurettes. Universal also has a great offering for families with the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of The Bad Guys 2 starring Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, and more. The release comes with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos audio, and a nice selection of supplements including a commentary track and a new short film.
We also spotlight the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of the sci-fi adaptation Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron from Paramount. The film celebrates its 20th anniversary with a SteelBook release with Dolby Vision and archival special features such as two commentary tracks and various featurettes. Sony celebrates the 30th anniversary of the western The Quick and the Dead from director Sam Raimi with a new 4K UHD Blu-Ray SteelBook featuring the film restored in 4K from the Original Camera Negative with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. The film starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio has a new interview with the screenwriter and deleted scenes.
The heroes at The Criterion Collection have a pair of wonderful titles this month. First, we have the Guillermo del Toro noir favorite Nightmare Alley hitting 4K UHD Blu-Ray with the original theatrical version along with an all-new black-and-white extended cut. Each cut is presented in Dolby Vision from 4K digital masters with new supplements including a commentary track, a making-of documentary, and interviews. The label also has the psychedelic drama Altered States from director Ken Russell debuting on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision from a restoration of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. This release includes a commentary track and new and archival interviews.
Music Box Films has the latest François Ozon drama When Fall Is Coming debuting on Blu-Ray with interviews, deleted scenes, bloopers, and more. The fine individuals at Deaf Crocodile continue to be saviors of international animation with Treasures of Soviet Animation: Volume 2 on Blu-Ray featuring the works of Lev Atamanov including The Snow Queen, The Scarlet Flower, and The Key. This trio of films has been meticulously restored by the label with new special features including commentary tracks and visual essays. The labels also has the Hungarian time travel film Sirius on Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the nitrate negative and a load of special features including a commentary track, a visual essay, interviews, and more.
The folks at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have some international crime dramas to admire on Blu-Ray. French icon Jean-Paul Belmondo stars as an erratic authority figure in Cop or Hood, newly restored in 2K by StudioCanal with a commentary track. Alain Delon gets in on the fun with Boomerang, which has been restored in 4K by StudioCanal with a commentary track. Things continue with Lino Ventura as a cop on deadline in Last Known Address, which has likewise been restored in 4K by StudioCanal with a commentary track. We come over to America for the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of The Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. The release has been newly restored in 4K from the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision. It comes with three commentary tracks, featurettes, and more.
