For the week of September 8th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
In the world of new studio films, the latest installment in the Despicable Me franchise hits as Minions & Monsters arrives on 4K UHD Blu-Ray courtesy of Universal with Dolby Vision and a Dolby Atmos audio track, along with various featurettes. Staying in the animated space, Warner Bros. has the latest DC animated offering Batman: Knightfall – Part One on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with Dolby Vision and a pair of featurettes. If we take things back a decade or so, we can delight in the 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of Your Name from GKIDS and Shout! Studios. The Makoto Shinkai body swap romance is presented in HDR10 and has loads of archival supplements, including documentaries, interviews, and more.
The 4K UHD upgrades continue with the zombie rage virus horror favorite 28 Days Later debuting on the format courtesy of Sony from a 4K remaster supervised by director Danny Boyle. The release is presented in Dolby Vision and includes a commentary tracks, featurettes, deleted scnes, and more. Lionsgate is taking us to the tonal polar opposite with the 4K UHD Blu-Ray upgrade of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which is presented in Dolby Vision and includes some new featurettes amongst its supplements. The wonderfully bizarre Boots Riley satire I Love Boosters arrives fresh from theaters on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a commentary track, interviews, and more.
It’s a good time for boutique labels, as we get to delight in some deep cuts like the comedy-thriller TAG: The Assassination Game from Synapse Films on Blu-Ray. The film starring Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton has been restored in 2K and is presented with a commentary track. There is also the queer French film noir The Cheat on Blu-Ray from Altered Innocence with a retrospective piece on the film.
It is a huge month for Arrow Video releases as we survey an array of new releases. First up, we dive into the J-Horror classic Ju-On: The Grudge on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision. The release comes with a pair of commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and more. We stay in Japan with the Blu-Ray release of the Wicked Priest Collection featuring the five films in the series remastered in 4K with visual essays, interviews, and more.
The label also has a strong slate of domestic titles, such as the sci-fi favorite Forbidden Planet on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from a 4K restoration of the 35mm Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision with three audio options. The release is packed with supplements, including the feature The Invisible Boy. The crime romance Tequila Sunrise starring Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell hits 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision with a commentary track, interviews, and more. We stay in the criminal world with Go from director Doug Liman on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision with a nice selection of supplements.
The fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome and OCN Distribution have an exciting slate of mainline and Partner Label titles on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray this month that offer a little something for everyone. First up, we have the long-awaited return of the Iconoscope line with a pair of made-for-TV movies debuting on Blu-Ray. The psychological high school thriller Death of a Cheerleader starring Kellie Martin and Tori Spelling was inspired by a real-life tragedy, while the TBS mystery thriller Disappearance finds a family stumbling across a ghost town. Both films have been remastered from a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative and include all-new special features.
As always, it’s a big month for horror on Blu-Ray, including the bizarre mock television horror outing Buffet Infinity from Yellow Veil Pictures, which includes an early cut of the film, commentary tracks, interviews, and more. There is a double dose of international horror titles, including the Cambodian folk horror film Tenement from Dark Sky Films and the 2024 Spanish-Argentine-French co-production The Wailing from Film Movement. Both films come with behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Film Movement continues with titles outside of the horror space, such as the erotic coming-of-age tale My Sole Desire and the wartime domestic servant drama The Chambermaid. We stay in the past with Bruno Dumont’s sequel Joan of Arc on Blu-Ray from KimStim, which features interviews and Q&As. Romanian satirist Radu Jude returns with his latest Kontinental ’25 on Blu-Ray thanks to 1-2 Special. The artist biopic Aloise has been restored in 4K from the Original Camera Negative thanks to Several Futures. The film features Isabelle Huppert and Delphine Seyrig as the titular artist at different points in her life.
Documentary fans are sitting pretty with a nice slate of Blu-Ray titles this month. First up, we have the gorgeous The Shepherd and the Bear courtesy of Willa, which includes some Q&As. Magnolia Pictures explores the world of Ozploitation features in Not Quite Hollywood, which comes home in a two-disc set packed with supplements. Fans can indulge in nostalgia with Action Figure Adventure: Season 1 & 2 from ETR Media.
