A close-up of a smiling person with a face adorned with gemstones, against a backdrop of a starry scene with a small silhouette of another figure.

One from the Heart: Reprise is a spectacular 4K restoration and reimagining of the 1982 cult classic from Francis Ford Coppola. Six minutes of footage have been added to replace the original negative, previously thought to be destroyed, resulting in a brand-new Reprise version, approved by Coppola himself. One from the Heart: Reprise tells the story of a Las Vegas couple (Teri Garr, Frederic Forrest) whose break-up on the Fourth of July leads them both to a night on the Strip in pursuit of their romantic fantasies (Raul Julia, Nastassja Kinski). But in this town of gamblers and dreamers, should they bet it all on dreams, or give true love another roll of the dice? Featuring breathtaking design, show-stopping set pieces, the stunning photography of Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) and accompanied by the wonderful Oscar®-nominated music of the one and only Tom Waits, this neon explosion of color, sound, and innovation is a cinematic valentine for all movie lovers.

    Video Quality

One from the Heart: Reprise has been given a 2160p/Dolby Vision restoration in 4K UHD that is a stunning viewing experience. This particular reworking of the film was only recently completed and marks the first time it is being distributed for home viewing. Fans of the original 1982 version of the film can also experience that version on the accompanying Blu-Ray disc that stems from the 4K restoration. For some reason, Lionsgate has decided not to put both versions on 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs, but those who want the original theatrical cut on 4K UHD Blu-Ray can find some versions released overseas that you can import. That being said, the Blu-Ray version of the theatrical cut is a monumental step up from the Blu-Ray iterations. We are talking about a night and day difference when it comes to the unsightly 2012 Blu-Ray included in the Francis Ford Coppola collection. This restoration allows the film to look the best it ever has on home entertainment, and it should be considered the best way to enjoy it at home.

The new 4K restoration has an ideal amount of natural film grain that allows the movie to sparkle and gives a lot of pleasing texture and detail to this heightened world. For the first time on home entertainment, you can clearly see specific elements of the lavish production design. Grain is organic and mostly holds to a consistent grain structure outside of a few fleeting moments where it gets extra dense and splotchy in low light. You get a miraculous amount of depth that makes the uncanny backgrounds feel more three-dimensional than ever. The improvements in contrast and overall clarity are unbelievable, especially when you look at the interior of the casino or the neon graveyard.

The UHD disc contains very splashy, nuanced colors throughout with saturation springing to life as it shows off the distinct locales. The most impressive moments of Dolby Vision implementation are in the exploration of the phantasmagorical Vegas strip and other pops of color in the lighting and clothes. You better believe that there is plenty of eye candy to go around. Black levels are extremely deep and allow the picture to maintain an excellent amount of depth and detail in darker environments. Highlights are brighter and offer greater stability without veering into blooming. Skin tones look natural and the clarity of the transfer gives you a striking amount of facial detail including beads of sweat. The transfer brings a rich vitality to this feature which it has been craving for a long time.

    Audio Quality

The 4K UHD Blu-Ray comes with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 and an LPCM 2.0 stereo track which both handle the soundscape of this unconventional musical incredibly well. Most will agree the standout aspect of this film is its musicality, and the room comes alive with each unique song that guides you through the story. Rarely have you felt as fully immersed in these emotions as you have from this presentation. Speakers remain notably engaged throughout the film, even during the quieter, interpersonal moments. Directionality of sound is never an issue with this track, and dialogue is reproduced with supreme clarity. All of the sounds are balanced well during the more active dance sequences. There are no explosions or brawls, but many specific moments provide a fantastic amount of activity in the low end. You could not ask for better from this audio presentation. There are optional English SDH subtitles provided.

    Final Thoughts

One from the Heart is an ambitious personal tale from Francis Ford Coppola that finds the director being too invested to make an effective film. With Frederic Forrest ostensibly playing his proxy on screen, the filmmaker views him through a sympathetic lens that does not register for the audience. The relationship between the central couple never feels worth rooting for, and you only wish they could find peace exploring their life beyond one another. Where the film shines is its visual dynamism; the creative production design and resplendent musical aesthetic come together for something better viewed rather than analyzed. The film is not without its treasures, but it is often deeply frustrating. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released a 4K UHD Blu-Ray featuring a magnificent A/V presentation and a terrific assortment of special features. If you are a fan of the film, this is not to be missed. Recommended

One from the Heart is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray and Digital.
